My dad used to shoot them in the lungs and they would never spray ar loose essence. I always thought that a head shot was the way to go but he said they will spray sometimes but not if you shoot them in the lungs. Anybody else heard of this?

I've shot them in the head and lungs with small cal. and some bigger cal cartridges and some would spray and some would not. Brother in-law uses the syringe pole and its a hit and miss also..
I stopped worry about them spraying a long time ago.. Just shoot them and come back in a day to pick them up if skinning them, I just used mine for bait and a call lure when the temps dropped...

I've dispatched quite a few skunks with the syringe pole and have yet to have one spray. I know of several other people that use the same method and uthenize several more than i do. Just make sure that you use Acetone and a minimum of 12cc. Some skunks have taken up tp 24cc before they kick the bucket.

.22 long HP...I inherited it when my step-grandpa passed on a few years ago. Neat little semi-auto made by J.C. Higgins/Sears-Roebuck.

Did it spray then/release its lovely aroma? Just curious if you shot him in the lungs since you dispatched him with a .22 and how it went. i have tried shooting a few skunks, but they always stink afterwards. I need to either get them in a 220 or dispatch them with acetone that i give to them with a syringe.

Yup it sprayed. Tried a lung shot this time but it didn't want to go down that easy so I just finished it off with a head shot. I think it sprayed with the first shot though (lung shot). Have you found pictures of your syringe pole to put up yet?

i have to take the pics first. If i remeber tonight i will take the pictures and post them. Just to let you know for materials, you will need: 1-5' piece of 3/4" cpvc pipe, 1-5' piece of 1/2 inch cpvc pipe, a minumum 12 cc syringe, a pack of small gauge needles that are minimum 1" long, and jug of acetone (can be found at any store that sells paint thinner), and some tape. I used a dremmel to make mine, but if you have time on your hands a hacksaw of some sort will work just as well.

Sounds good. When/if you post the pics, you should put it as a new topic in the trapping section of the forum so others can find it quick too!

silverdog lent me a couple DP traps to try out just to see if I like them or not. I set them and let my fiance do the bedding and baiting because she wanted to give it a shot. Wouldn't ya know she caught her first coon a couple days later 8)
