13 Stripe Ground Squirrel Bait/FOR bait

Post by 1Shooter »

Has anyone ever trapped 13 stripe ground squirrels to use as coyote bait before?
Image
I'm trying to trap a couple but don't know quite what to use as bait. Can't really tell what they've been eating in my back yard so I just put a blind set in a trail they've been using. They're a bit interested in dry corn, I know that much. Has anyone tried grinding these critters up for coyote bait and how well did it work for you?

they will work good, make sure you feeze them so their fresh. I would throw them in a dirt hole set, and not worry about grinding them up

Ground up corn works well or soybeans. I just shoot them here with a 22 l.r. or 17 HMR..
I take mine and feed them to the baby red foxs..

Thanks for the input guys, and nice shooting Tim! Looks like a good time :) I'll have to figure out the very best way of "harvesting" these gophers. Would love to stick the .22 out of my window but I'm pretty sure I'm still considered as living in town.

If there's one thing I've learned so far from trapping these little buggers it's that pan tension is imperative

When i trapped gophers, i would place the trap upside down and place the pan right over the hole. When they come out of the hole, their head hits the pan and catches them right behind the head. Also you dont need to stake the trap when you do it this way either. I never adjusted pan tension when doing it this way either. Another way to do it, is dig out there hole a little bit and place a pocket gopher kill trap with the hooks that hook them right behind the shoulder and make it a hair trigger and when they come up the hole and try to get around the trigger it will nail them. I haven't done and gopher trapping since i was a little kid. I thought i was making good money at .50 cents a tail for striped gopher and 1.00 a tail for pocket gopher

Yup, I figure there's some lessons to come from trapping them that can be applied, on a larger scale, to all animals I intend to target.
