Well there was a reason i cleaned out the traps monday and tuesday night  With this small front coming in, my records are telling me that the day before and during a front, the critters are moving in my area. Well tuesday night was the night before the front, and last night was the front. In the pic is: 2 skunks, 9 mink, 13 coon, 3 rats, and 6 beaver. It was another mixed bag last night. 1 of the coon we did not even skin beacause when we brought it in the fur shed, it was real obvious that this coon had a good start of mange. The legs were missing hair all over and the tail was starting to go rat like, and all the hair around its mouth was gone. It was one ugly coon!!! Oh and we caught another 33lb coon too :D I love it when they say a 5XL coon is over 38" and these 30 plus lb coon have been stretching between 43 and 44 inches :D

I have been picking up some random fur here and there lately on my really small trapline. I only have 5 snares out by my house right now. I pulled my big line about a week early, because i had a grandma that went to visit the good lord! We all knew it was coming sooner or later. On the 28th i plan on setting a pile of snares in a new area for some cats. I need to get some beaver sets out soon, so i have some bait to make a couple cubby sets for the cats. In the mean time i caught i a grey fox a little while back. What was weird, is that the snare was behind the ears, and in the jaw. Nothing was around his neck :? I had some cheapo snares i got as a gift and have been trying to burn them up, so i can use the locks for making cat snares.

Looks like you've been busy Chris! Nice work!! Still doing this good? Haven't seen any new pics in a while...

I see you've got a beagle :D ...what do you use him/her for? Are you a rabbit hunter too? Just curious...we've got 3 Beagles (well one is part Basset) and have been trying to find the time to try rabbit hunting with them and just to do some training. If you do rabbit hunt with your beagle...any pointers?? Thanks

The only traps i have out right now, are a select few under ice beaver sets  I picked up a few more animals after i quit posting on this thread, but nothing spectacular. The beagle i have is actually the wife's dog. He comes with me when she gets upset at him and wants to work on things around the house. He is more of a companion around the house than a hunter. I have never hunted rabbits with him (even though he is a member of the "rabbit hound association" when we bought him) so i don't have any pointers for you. I really wish i had more coyotes in my immediate area to trap, but oh well i will just have to stay focused on what is in the area for fur.

Well I wish you good luck and happy trapping so you will catch more! As long as you aren't totally getting skunked then that helps keep spirits up a bit.

Oh darn I was really hoping you used him to rabbit hunt :( Well if you know anyone that does, let me know, we sure could use the guidance.

Yah, it's hard to trap 'em if they ain't there! Good luck again and may your traps be FULL! :)

Its not that hard to train a dog to hunt rabbits, it seems that most dogs take to them and a handler is left with the job of trying to break them of it..LOL

Best you could do is go kill a rabbit and then drag it around the yard leaveing a scent trail. Then bring dog into yard and let him work the area and hopefuly picks up the scent trail. If the dog takes to the scent trail then go hunting and the dog will learn from there....Good luck...

Thanks for the pointers Tim. I guess the thing that we are worried about is training the dogs to try and run the rabbit back by us to shoot. And we do know that one of the three is very gun shy. Any ideas if/how a dog can get broke of that? I'm not sure what caused it since we've had her as a pup and what not. She has ran a couple rabbits in the yard before and loved it! We just haven't had time with the other two yet...well that and finding a darn rabbit to practice with or hunt is a whole nother thing!

Rodeorulz - You should start a topic in the "all things that are dogs" section of the forum and i think you might get a better response to what your looking for. Tbush watches that one pretty close and is really good at training dogs to do what people want them to do and break them of certain habits :D

First snared K-9.
