Kenmare Coyote Tournament January 17, 2009

The Kenmare Fire Department will be hosting a 1 day coyote hunt Jan. 17th 2009 in Kenmare ND, as a fund raiser for a new fire hall.

The coyote hunt will be headquartered at the Memorial Hall in Kenmare.

There will be seminars on coyote hunting, door prizes, and meals for contestants in the hunt.

There is a $80 entry fee per 2 man team. ($30 to KFD- $50 to payback) Payback will be (1) 30%, (2) 25% (3) 20% (4) 15% (5) 10%. There will also be a big coyote, little coyote contest, $20 entry fee, 100% payback on this contest.

The tournament will get under way with a rules meeting that one team member must be present at Jan. 16th at 7pm, Next there will be a Calcutta auction sponsored by Kenmare Vets Club Inc.

I read the rules for the tournament. I have a topper on my Ford, is that allowed for transporting your coyotes?

9. Coyotes must be exposed to the outdoors, laid out side by side and not stacked. Coyotes cannot be placed in plastic bags, enclosed boxes, or stored in side of a vehicle. It is impossible to get consistent core temperatures if these standards are not followed by everyone. NO EXEPTIONS.

I think this is pretty clear. If you bring in coyotes to be checked in and the core temps are off you risk having those coyotes disqualified.

KENMARE TOURNAMENT RULES

1. Entry fee shall be $80 per team. ($30 to KFD, $50 to Payback,) Payback will be as follows: 1st 30%, 2nd 25%, 3rd 20%, 4th 15%, & 5th 10%.
2. Largest coyote ($10) and smallest coyote ($10) weights will be taken at check in. (100% payback).
3. No Para planes, ultra lights, airplanes, UTV’s, ATV’s and/or snowmobiles.
4. Predators must be taken at least 50 ft. from any vehicle.
5. Use of an airplane, Para planes, ultra lights, UTV’s, ATV’s and/or snowmobiles the day of the tournament to locate Predators is prohibited.
6. Predators can be taken with any center fire, shotgun, rim fire, or bow.
7. No more than two persons per team. One vehicle only.
8. Core temperatures will be taken from all predators at checked-in. Predators will be disallowed if temperature and time do not match. Tournament officials will have soul discretion of disallowing the coyote in question
9. The night of the rules meeting Jan. 16, blocks will be handed out to be placed in each coyote’s mouth immediately upon retrieval. The block must have the team number, and time of day marked clearly on the tag. Bands will be provided to place around the coyote’s mouth (top & bottom) to secure the block. THE BLOCK MUST BE FILLED OUT COMPLETELY AND BANDED IN THE COYOTES MOUTH. ANY COYOTE TURNED IN WITHOUT A PROPERLY FILLED OUT BLOCK (SEQUENCE NUMBER, TEMPERATURE, TEAM NUMBER) BANDED IN THE COYOTES MOUTH WILL BE DISALLOWED. All blocks issued for tourney must be returned to KFD!! Coyotes must be exposed to the outdoors, laid out side by side and not stacked. 10. All entrants must be present and available to answer questions at evening check-in.
11. No live decoys and /or dogs. (No running predators with dogs.)
12. No baiting.
13. All ties will be broken by check-in times.
14. Mouth calls, hand calls and electronic calls can be used.
15. No pooling of animals between teams.
16. Check in times strongly enforced. It is the contestant’s responsibility to check in with a tournament official. Check in times will be 6:00 AM to 7:00PM central time. Tournament clock will be at check in table.
17. You have to locate and call your own predators. You cannot have a second team or individual out scouting for you.
18. All coyotes/fox that are checked in will be inspected, and will be a donation to the tournament to help cover the costs of the event. Points will be awarded for the following predators: Coyote =10, Fox=5
19. Contest hours are 6:00 am cst to 7:00 pm cst January 17, 2009.
20. We will be picking 5 teams at random by number to be mediators, with 5 additional teams as alternates prior to the start of the tournament. In the case a team with any coyotes that are disqualified during the check-ins, the team/s with the rule infraction will have an opportunity—after check-in on Saturday—to request a review by their peers. The review will be of the facts as they pertain to the coyotes in question. One member of each of the five teams will have a vote, and the majority vote will be the final ruling. The team that requests the review will have to pay an additional $75 upon that request. This $75 will be refunded back in the event the ruling in question is overturned, If the ruling stands, the $75 will be forfeited by the team who requested the review. This is not an opportunity to re-write rules, but an opportunity to an impartial review of the facts.

21. All applicable licenses must be in your possession at time of tournament. If you are hunting without a state furbearers license or applicable tribal license, local authorities may be notified and you will be disqualified from the tournament.




22. Sportsmanship. Any team—upon the sole discretion of the tournament director—that shows a lack of consideration for other teams, the rules, or is just being an all-around jerk, will be refunded their entry fee and asked to leave. If it is determined that any team or team member who—in the past—has a history of questionable actions, coyotes, behavior, etc., that is deemed detrimental to the enjoyment of the tournament by others, they will be banned from entering the tournament. No team has an inherent right to hunt our tournament, and the KFD reserves the right to refuse entry to any team or team member who has displayed the above-mentioned unsportsmanship-like behavior.


The rules are set out for the benefit of all participants to ensure everyone has equal opportunity for a great hunt and a chance at winning the tournament. Each coyote will be examined at check in, and all rules will be strongly enforced. Core temperatures, time of kill, and sequence will be checked on all coyotes checked-in. Properly filled out blocks is imperative. We will have a large pool of coyotes to compare temperatures and times with, you should expect your coyotes to fall with in those ranges. If you check-in a coyote that does not fall with-in those ranges the tournament officials will have soul discretion of disallowing the coyote in question. Violating the tournament rules or the laws of the state can lead to that teams removal from the tournament and depending on the situation the local authorities may be notified. If you have a snowmobile and are considering entering the tournament just to run the coyotes down we would suggest you do not spend your money on the entry fee. Trapping, snaring, live trapping, shooting coyotes the night before, shooting them from a vehicle or trying to take a coyote in any way that would jeopardize the integrity of the tournament will not be tolerated and you will be removed from the tournament immediately. Anything questionable will be up to the discretion of the tournament official to determine if a coyote will be allowed or disallowed. It is the burden of the tournament participant to follow the rules and to turn in coyotes that do not appear to be taken out side what is allowed by the rules. Meaning that if your team turns in 4 coyotes that two of them are blocked in correctly based on times and temps. The ones in question will be disallowed. If you turn in coyotes that are all shot in the hind quarters with a shot gun, with dry bladders and empty colon, you may have a problem convincing anyone they where taken legally. The tournament officials do not need to see you running them down, and explaining what happened will not help if every indication points towards you running them down with a snowmobile.
The burden is on the hunter to prove that the coyote was taken as per tournament rules not the officials. If you would
like to spend the weekend talking with coyote hunters and hunting coyotes with a chance at winning some gas money for more hunts, we would love to see you at the tournament

hey guys I might stand corrected here, but from the information I got, 33 teams, the calcutta went really really well, I will post it all tomorrow when the results are all talleyed up. Had a really good crowd. Jerry Hunsley put on an awesome seminar. Wind is a bugger tonight, hopefully it will be down tomorrow. Snow is sure not a favorable thing, everyone is going to work to get some coyotes. Will have more tomorrow.

Yep it was the worst day out I've had,stuck with the truck, stuck face first in the snow with shoes on, shoe bindings broke!took an hour to get a coyote shot at 100 yds,wind and snow blowing coulden't get down gravel roads bla bla bla.........but beats sitting home. We shot one and ended up in 7th I think??? Everyone was safe, and all good sportsmen Hats off to KFD they did a great job agian.... the food was wonderful,the prizes are keepsakes and nice to see the warden also... My thanks to you all
