help sighting in 22.250

Post by kmg »

Ive got a Rem 700BDL heavy barrel 22.250 with tasco 6-24x40 scope. Checked to make sure base and rings were tight. Shooting hornady 50 gr vmax. I used a benchrest and sighted in at 50 yards, waiting until barrel was cool to the touch before firing each shot. Then i shot a 3 shot group at 100 yards, and the group was tight but 3 inches to the left. I then sighted in 0.5 in. high at 100 yds. My question is, why would there be a 3 inch difference in shot placement from 50 yards to 100? note: i only sighted in at 100 because i dont have enough room at home for any longer. This was done with no wind 45* F. Would there be another difference from say 100 to 200 yards? i am planning on sighting dead on at 200

Is it possible to show us pictures of the targets so we can see your groupings? Was all the shooting done the same day from 50 out to 100? I would shoot it out to 200 and see if you are seeing the same thing. Now that you are sighted in for 1"high at 100 try taking it back to 50 and see if it moved the right on you or is shooting dead on. Was the 50 yard shooting and 100 yard shooting done at different powers on the scope? It sounds like it could have been a parralax issue the more i think about it.

all the shooting was done the same day. same magnification 14x. i understand that bullets might curve left or right or up or down in flight but 3 inches in 50 yards seemed pretty drastic. i'll look for a place to shoot out to 300

does seem a little odd. Is your barrel free floated? How is the trigger on the gun? If you have to hook a towstrap to it and use your truck to pull it it might be a factor. Some of the low end scopes take a few shots to get the adjustments moving. Truth be told, some scopes just don't like to adjust in cold weather. Sometimes it takes the recoil of a few shots for the adjustments to take. One thing I guy can do is lightly bump the buttstock on the ground or bench after making the adjustments. Don't get carried away. You don't want to break anything. Using your knuckles to give a sharp knock on the scope tube can work too.
Don't feel bad, I've seen 400 dollar scopes that give troubles like this.

Also, make sure the gun is unloaded before banging it around. Don't mean to insult you. Just had to say it.

yep I just hit the butt of my gun with the palm of my hand a couple of times after I make an adjustment. a couple of good thumps seems to do it.

When makeing a site adjustment just give the dial a few more extra turns and then turn it back to where it needs to be..

that is a good point as well Tim....go a few clicks past your set point them come back again....I still give them a good rap on the butt of the gun.

Rather than bang the gun around you could just give the scope a tap on top of the dial with a empty shell or a quarter or what ever else you may have handy thats solid...

the trigger is very light, my grandpa must have had it worked on, its definetly no factory trigger pull. i think its not really the gun/scope thats the problem because it will group good. but the trajectory of the ammo, hornady 50gr vmax, for whatever reason, seems to curve a few inches from 50 yds to 100 yds. no obvious problem with the inside of the barrel.

Have you tried 200 yards yet? I would go out to 200 in 50 yard increments and then back to 50 in 50 yard increments. Shooting from bullseyes at 50 to 3" left in a 50 yard increment doesn't seem right at all when the shooting was all done the same day.
