hey fellas,

I am looking for some sort of field ballistics calculator to install on my smart phone for figuring out the dope for long range target shooting. I have a custom .308 that I want to really stretch out and it used to be a guy needed a palm pilot and there was some program you could load on it where ya fill out all the data(range, wind speed, weather conditions....ect) and it would compute a sort of "firing solution" and then you dial your turrets and let it go....anyone got any suggestions on this?

Thanks for your time guys!

Jay,

Check out "shooter" for android. It's a decent program, but it isn't free. It is good though.

Thanks Xdeano, I kinda remembered that you had the heads up on some of those programs from other threads in the past. I did buy it and it looks really cool. seems to have a bit of a learning curve, at least to me but I think I can catch on. Do you know if when you buy this, you can also download it on a laptop so you can have it in a large display rather than only on the small screen on a phone or would a guy have to purchase it again to download on his computer??? I kinda would like to have it on both my phone and my laptop but maybe its not even possible...

Anyway, thanks again. :D

is it still the "shooter" app even tho its on the computer? It would just be nice to be able to load the firearm and ammo profile and kinda just learn my way around on a full size screen rather that my phone but I am sure i need to learn that also because when I would need it, i wont have a laptop on a coyote stand.....lol

Thanks again if you should come accross that site or however you got it on your computer, feel free to let me know.

Have a great day!

Well, here goes. My first post here and I'm hoping it's not taken the wrong way.

I'm by no means an expert, although have spent a fair amount of time on stands. I'm curious about the use of a program on a phone (don't have any kind of mobile phone, which may be why I'm curious...) when calling. I suppose there have been a few times when we could have tried that, but very seldom have we had time to do much other than just get on the critter and follow it until there's a chance for a good shot. Can't imagine calling up a program, waiting for it to boot up, input the myriad data, wait for the (probably instantaneous) solution, then adjust the scope and take the shot. I mean, it's not exactly rocket science, assuming that you have a fairly flat shooting outfit.

We seldom have time to even use the laser when there's a critter coming in, so we laser different objects along the expected approach after getting set up. There's gotta be something here that I'm missing. Could you please enlighten me? Thank you.

I agree, I typically range everything I shoot at if I think it is much past 300 yards. I wold rather know the range at 400 than rush a shot at 250. I would agree though the chance of me taking the time to or have the time to input data on my phone prior to the shot is aout zero. I could see were prairie dogs shooters or even guys who are just trying to set up for a particular shot might find it real handy. if your goal is to make a 1000 yard shot on a coyote than something like this may be the ticket.

You guys actually hit it on the head more than you know. It is not for using on a stand really. when I sit down, I use the rangefinder, hit particular objects and when a coyote comes in and passes that object, I have a good idea what distance he is at but I like to let them come as close as they are willing pretty much.

The reason I am looking into this is that I have two scenarios in mind. the first is this..."dammit, they just hung up at 600 yards" (or what ever distance waaaaay out there) and they, for some reason or another want to sit and yell at me or whatever might keep them around long enough to get a well calcutated shot. the other is spot and stalk scenarios where a guy can only get so close or pick them off thru binos at a distance where a guy can try a shot like this. I am saving this type of shot for my custom, trued .308 and trying to learn to do it right and not just banging away with a .223 and hoping. almost "coyote sniping" if you will. I know there are guys on this sight with these skills and I am kinda hoping I might extend my own skills out a bit farther but I want to have the right tools and learn to do it so that I have as good a chance as possible to make a humane kill or a clean miss and I am fine with either one(although I prefer the former to the latter!)

Take it easy fellas! :D

I'm a caveman. I write data on a chunk of masking tape and stick it to the buttstock on top of the comb. Then I put another piece of clear packing tape over the top of that. It's nowhere near as precise, but it doesn't need "bars" to work.

I pretty much do that as well but I just wanted to try a different way. the good part, from what I read about the "shooter" program is that you do not need cell service for it to work, or that what it says anyway.......we will see I guess!

No problem, I figured a guy would need service too but it says otherwise right in the instructions. Now I just gotta find a place in se MN to get out to at least 600yds, preferably 1000 for the sake of practice. On a separate note, I got "rufus" the metal coyote" all set to practice on. I shot a big male a few years back and traced him out on cardboard then, onto 3/8 inch steel and cut him out with a plasma cutter. best practice I got short of live coyotes and you can hear a hit from at least 500yds(furthest I have shot him at). I got 4 more metal coyotes in the works with various different angles. I am gonna try and post a pic but I really dont know how and it seems to me a bit challenging for an IQ deficient individual such as myself! Here goes with the pic and btw, if anyone has any ideas on the easiest way to post pics, please advise....

Later fellas,

Jaybic

Jay,
Shooter will get you where you need to be pretty close but you still need to send the rounds down range and get your.true dope on the round. Ive been in poor coverage areas in my area and it still gives me my dope minus the weather conditions. Those weather conditions can change poi quite a bit. Especially if you want a one shot kill.
