Vision problems

Post by Cuts Crooked »

Went to the range this AM to burn up some older ammo in my new toy. Something weird happened. I started seeing distortions in my peripheral vision when looking through my scope, and only in the eye that looks through the scope. When I pulled back a bit to clear my vision, the distortions remained for a few minutes. It reminded me of the special effects from the movie "Predator" Kinda like a wavy distortion of something that isn't there, but just in the periphery of my vision. It went away after couple of minutes and I started shooting again......and it came back. So I packed it up and went home. No problems the rest of the day.
Never had anything like that happen before. Any of you ever have this happen?

Yes......eye fatigue after shooting. my eyes start to really freak out after extended time on a scope. What brand of scope and what magnification are you using?

was you shooting into the wind. Burnt powder residue could of been coming back into your eye and causing it to blur.. Scope may not be in focus as well for your eye.

Nah, no wind and the sun at my back. Local range is pretty nicely set up for morning shooting. Covered firing line with concrete & steel shooting benches. Berms at 25, 50, 100, 135, & 210 yards. It's across a very shallow valley and protected from breeze/wind by tree lines on three sides and the valley runs up a low hill, with trap and skeet ranges at the top of the hill.
Been doing my range work and muzzle loading stuff there for about 20 years, just never had anything like that happen to me before. I have had "floaters" in my vision at times when shooting my "buffalo gun" with it's fine peep sight, but nothing like this. Kinda shook me up a bit. :?

Maybe getting a detached retina. can happen from getting old and shooting big guns.

Cuts,
Yes,Tim is right, could be a more serious problem.A detached retina or a vitreous detachment.Do not take chances with either. If any problem persists see an eye specialist asap.
I've had both with both being attributed to 'recoil' as the likely cause. On my retina detachment it started as if there was a shade in my eye that was gradually lowering. If the shade had been allowed to go all the way down I would have had an irreversible loss of vision in that eye.It was on a saturday after a goose hunt and had I waited til monday(my plan),my vision would have been gone.Thank the wife who had a brain and insisted I go in right away.
There are degrees to this type of injury but don't take chances. If the macula is involved can be very serious.
Tons of info out there, here's a start:

Well...that's just GREAT! I went to the links that Dcoy provided and found that I have all the warning indicators for possible detachment of the retina. I'm over 60, hypertensive, near sighted, Shoot a lot of big bore stuff with heavy recoil, and have had floaters in my vision most of my life!
On the plus side, I've had no repetition of the phenomenom since that day......and I have a complete physical scheduled next month, including an eye exam by an opthamolic surgeon. In the meantime, I'm gonna knock off shooting my 45-70 until I see the eye doctor. (I had been shooting it too on the day I noticed the problem)

Well, I'm inclined to think that you were right in your original thought that it was eye fatigue. Especially since there has been no repetition of the phenomenon. But I tend to be the optimistic type. I will bring it up during my physical. ( I get one every year for my job  ) This "getting old" stuff is definitely not for wussies!!!!!!

Good News...........Bad news. :?

Welp, my physical is over and my eyes are ok. Probably eye fatigue according to the optometrist. However..........I am now officially a type II diabetic.
