Hey guys, thought i would introduce myself. I'm new on here and new to the sport of predator hunting. I've learned quite a bit by reading the posts. I'm still waiting on my first coyote. I bought the new remington 700 sps varmint rifle in .22-250. and i'm curious as to what bullet weight would be the best on yotes, I have and assortment from 40 grainers up to 60 grains. I shot a doe with it here in North Carolina in december with the 60 gr. Nosler partitions and it suprised me by how much damage it did. I'm thinking that this load is a little much for coyotes, am i wrong? I also have a question on scopes, i have a Nikon buckmaster 6-18x40 with target turrents and side focus mounted on it, is this to much magnification for hunting yotes? Any input will be a big help. I'm hoping to get a chance at one this weekend in ohio before i start my new job in Illinois on monday, then it will weekend adventures in illinois if i can find a place to hunt. Thanks again!!!

Hi there, welcome.I'm new here myself and its a great place.Solid info and no fighting etc.
Sounds to me like you've got a good set up.I personally don't use more than 10 power scopes(tried # of higher powers though)cause it shows me how old and shaky I am  ,but many do.You've got the range of power options so that it should work anywhere though.
I've owned many 22-250s and they are great. The only one I have left is a Blaser and though I've had it for years(one of three barrels for the rifle)I don't shoot it much.(whole rig has gone up in price so much I'm almost afraid to use it except for the one barrel,a 257 Wby mag,I use for deer here on the prairie). In that barrel, the best shooting bullet is the 40 gr Nosler BT.(a screamer load using 38 grs of IMR 4064)
Two of my 3 coyote buddies shoot 22-250s and they both shoot 50 gr Nosler BTs.One of them just tested a standard factory load(Remington I think)in a 60 gr hollow point and was really impressed with its accuracy.I do recall him saying they were hard to find though.Actually I needed to talk to him about snow geese anyway so just got him up to ask about this.He said that Winchester Ballistic Silvertips in both 50 and 55 gr versions shot very well in his rifle also.Suppose I should quit rambling here but maybe some of this will help.Your specific question of whether the 60gr is too much is tough to answer. It depends on speed, distance, where you hit and so on.In many instances it may well do less damage than, say the 40 gr screaming at 4000 fps plus.If it shoots real good,I'd use it.The reason my buddy was snooping around trying those 60 grainers is he wanted less 'spinners'and more just plain 'drop deads' than he was getting at longer ranges. There are serious guys here who know a lot more than me so I'm sure you'll get more ideas and info as well.
There's an Illinois thread on here you might want to look at if you haven't already.Plenty of coyotes there so load up.
Good hunting!

ive shot a 22-250 for a few years now on coyotes and when i shot those blazing 40 grain hollow points at 4,000 fps they blew big holes in the hide with little or no penetration. This past season i bumped up to the 55 grain hornady moly coated v-max bullets and they seem to shoot great out of my gun. Although i like the 55 grain loads i am going to try the 50 grain hornady moly coated vmax mainly to get a little more speed when shooting. the heavier bullet in my opinion will give you less spinners more dirt naps on the spot. if you find the right powder to bullet ratio load for your gun you will be happy.

I also shoot a 250 and my gun shoots the 55 gr boat tail hollow point the best and have had great results, depends if you hunting for fur or not? My scopes nothing fancy but I keep it at 6 power then I can bracket the size of the coyote in my scope, at 200yds it fills the area between the heavey reticle at300 it only fits in one side between the cross hair and the wide part, at 400 kinda hard to explian its just a instinct, I put out a coyote cut out, life size and just figured it out. I'm sighted dead on at 300 and 200 and 1.5 in high at 100 and 5/6 in low at 400 hope it helps :)

Thanks for the input guys, i greatly appreciate it. I guess i will stick with 60gr. Nosler Partitions until i shoot them out. My gun likes them somewhat and its dead on at 300 yards, really dont like the baseball size group @ that distance. It still aught to be good enough drop em in their tracks though.

22-250 is a great caliber i shot one for a few years and really liked it. I shot 55grain softpoints through mine mostly becasue that is what was best on fur. I keep my scope on 12 power but thats just me.
