where's all the fox

Post by bucksnbears »

i sprained my wrist yesterday so i could not (well maybe) work today so decided to go on a recon mission. conditiond were perfect, cold, no wind and 2 inches of fresh snow. i put on about 180 miles on gravel and no maintenence roads and only cut 2 sets of fox tracks. unreal. i did see way more coyote tracks than normal but was going for fox so did'nt try for them. also cut a traveling pair of wolf tracks. they stayed on a praire trail for about 3 miles than went into a cornfield. i REALLY wanted to try calling them out but figured i'd leave them alone. this is at least 25 miles from heavy timber . i seen where they tried abit at a badger den to dig it out.. anyway, the fox thing sucks as i like to get after them more than coyotes

Sounds like to many big dogs running the flat country? The fox are more than likley close to farm sites and human activity as to not get thier asses into trouble

i really can't believe our fox population is this low. our drainage ditches that runfor miles used to be loaded with fox. it was not unusual to walk a mile and get 3-4 in 1 mile. i did see quite a few litters this summer but they seem to have disappeared. maybe mange has come back :?: i have shot 8 coyotes so far and they have all had mange. there are alot of jackrabbits around. this may sound far-fetched but could bald eagles have an impact on fox pups. there are alot of them around. they normally hang around the water ways but lately i've been seeing them out in the open. i'll bet i seen 10 of them yesterday. TBush, as for the fox hanging closer to farmstead, yeah, that is a good place to find-see them but i went by lots of them yesterday and no luck. they are just GONE :( :(

Interesting about the 'Baldies'.Been seeing them here more and more.Saw more during deer season than in the last 5-6 yrs combined.Didn't take them long to find the neighbor boys gut shot first deer either.
As to fox pups, they would if they had the opportunity.Go look below a Baldy nest if you ever get a chance.Hell, wouldn't surprise me to find a human bone laying there.

I've been seeing a few greys around the property that I bowhunt. It is an 80 acre aspen clearcut with 4th year re-gen and a couple large slash-piles. Went out this morning and looked for tracks. Found about 4 sets of fox tracks, and equal number of coyote tracks along with a couple fresh scent posts. Nothing came to the call though.

Come to think of it, I did notice a red fox with mange pretty bad about three years ago. I haven't seen any in the last couple of years, atleast none that I could positively identify as a red fox (saw a couple one night while walking out of the woods, but they darted into the standing corn before I could if they were reds or greys).

I ran over an adult on Thursday night just 4 miles south of Bismarck.
