DustyC trapping 09

Post by DustyC »

Well, with hunting season winding down around here and all of the cows gathered, I decided that yesterday I was going to start setting my line. ( scouted alot of new country this summer and got alot of permission from people to trap on so I'm expecting a good season. Yesterday I set 36 snares, 4 dirt holes, 2 scent posts, and 2 mafia sets with 3 traps each. I plan on getting back out tomorrow and setting another ranch That has a large coyote population. It also has a really good population of bobcats and hasn't been trapped in 4 years. I founnd the place by ground crewing for WS. I can't wait forbobcat season to open. Only 12 more days!!!  I'llpost pictures as they are available.

Heres the first batch of fur that I sold yesterday. I was pretty happy with the prices for what the market is today. I sold 28 coyotes, 1 bobcat, 4 red fox, and 1 mountain lion. I sold 17 coyotes @ $24, 7 @ $16, 3 @ $12, and 1 that had slipped a patch of belly hair for $5. The coyotes averaged $20.17. I also sold 9 carcass coyots for $6. The 4 fox brought $50 dollars total. 2 @ $15 and 2 @ $10. The one narrow bellied, 32", C+ bobcat brought $200. The mountain lion brought $400. All for a grand total of $1269. I have had 4 coyotes eagle eaten, 2 with mange, 1 bobcat snared and eagle eaten, and 1 bobcat killed and eaten by a lion in the trap.

BnB, they'll just sell it to a taxidermist to mount. I want to kill the big tom thats running around here that got my other bobcat!!!!!  By his tracks, he's huge. Any way, I finally was able to sneak the camera out of the house to go check a little bunch of 7 snares about a mile behind the house and this is what I found. :D :D
snare1.JPG
Nice pale coyote.

This one isn't so pale!
snare3.JPG
Nice triple on 7 snares. This spot over the past 3 years is usually good for at least 8 coyotes a year.

3 out of 7 is damn good looks like you got the snaring thing down. I love those little short lines that produce that well year after year. Takes 15 minutes to check them and 25 to pull out the victims.

Heres a coyote on a homemade drag that I use when the country is a little bit open. It really digs into the ground.
on a drag.JPG
Nice solid hook-up with a #3 Montana Special. I am going to go with the bridger from now on though. It is hard to get the Montanas leveled up.

DustyC i was going to ask you what the difference was in the bridger versus the montana special since they look a lot a like, but then i saw the end of your post on how they are hard to level up. Trap tuning is something that a lot of people seem to overlook!! Great job on the hook up and yeah that drag bit into that ground pretty good with out any brush :D

Ya i have had the same issues with the Montana's they just take a lot more work to get them ready it's tough to beat the bridgers.

Nice work looks like your drag is working real well. What did you model it after?
