ouch, best to know the laws before dropping the hammer. If he thought he was legal and shot that lion with a bow...I almost feel bad for the guy. That would be something to have one come wandering under your treestand and stick it with a arrow. Dusty, keep us posted.

I would be alittle nervous if I was in a tree stand and one came walking under me, In 2 seconds the cat could be sitting in the tree with you

A mountain lion with a bow would be an amazing accomplishment!!!! Even for the biggest world renown bowhunters that would be something that not many acommplish.

I have not heard anymore news on the illegal mountain lion, but it is going to count. I highly doubt that the season will remain open for another week. Pheasant season opens this weekend, i'm sure they will take the last two. I will try to kept everyone up to date. I was really hoping to hunt the cats in some snow but it is not looking good.

talked to the game warden today apparently their has only been 3 lions killed. He also explained why the illegal lion counted he basically said because it was still by a hunter. i guess i can understand that. we sure could use some snow to aid in the hunting

So far in S.D. 7 lions have been killed and everyone has been a female. I don't know how many were wet. There is a guy in town who had a hunt of a life time. He got a cat first time out and within a couple minutes on stand. He hiked back in a place up in the Black Hills. Found a likely spot , took off his backpack and rifle and set them by a tree. Then he walked out a little ways and set up his E-Caller. He no sooner turned it on and heard limbs snap behind him and there stood the cat. Scared the living crap out of him. He slowly turned and fired one shot. The cat took off and he thought he hit her. Long story short , after a half hour he found her dead about 150 yds, away.
On another note I was on some forum and there was a guy who has called numerous cats with cat vocalizations and E-caller. He mentioned his success rate went way up when he started using E-caller and cat sounds. He was a little tight lipped on what kinds of sounds though. This guy had called cats with mouth calls before but many more with E-Caller. Might be somthing to keep in mind if your trying for mountain lions.

So now if i doing any calling i need to travel. But their has been talks of lions around my uncles farm so i will try their later this year. Also that last mountain lion was killed 1 mile north of grassybutte if i'm not mistaken 3 of the 5 were killed in that area.

Here are the facts. The cat was actually killed 8 miles west of Grassy Butte. It was a 84 pound female. I have a muley buck tag out there. At one point I happended to look behind me and there were 3 of them sitting on a ledge in the middle of some cedars. At about 150 yards the cats showed no fear. I had all the time in the world to set up my shooting sticks and try and pick out the biggest one. I shot this one and watched a bigger one scatter into the cedars. The third cat was unphased by the rifle shot and remained sitting one the ledge as the cat I hit flopped around on the ground screaming horrific sounds. Here are the pictures of me and the fifth mountain lion shot.

Shot in the neck at 150 yards. She was 73" in length.
