Re: Coyotehunter
That was a dry pair and the second dry pair I had come in and work the dogs this summer. I made him drag the male back to the truck. Hell he would shoot the dead ones in the snares if I let him.

Re: Coyotehunter
He begged to shoot the one out there at almost a quarter of a mile. I just chuckled and said do you know how far that is. He said "no, how far?" 425 yards I says' to him. He looked back through his 6X scope and said "can I shoot her". I just smiled and said watch this. Bang, flop! I said did you see it and he smiled and said he seen hair fly everywhere. I just about let him shoot but even if he had the hold over I just think it is not enough gun for that distance. I have seen him shoot praire dogs out to 300 yards though with no problems at all even with that old 6x scope.

Re: Coyotehunter
You need to tell Randy that since he is getting that scope mastered that he should start trying to pick them off with the old iron sites That is something too few of people know how to do these days

Re: Coyotehunter
I did age one coyote useing a tooth chart. Or I should say I sat with a biologist while he did it to a old one I had shot and boiled clean so he could read all the indexes they gave in that chart. It was surprising how little info the teeth gave. To many variables with the teeth. There are I believe what he called suture lines in the skull............the mating lines on the tip and bottom of the skull. There are several and if you have looked at a european mount or boiled and cleaned a skull before you know what I am talking about. You can judge the age to an extent from how fused up theses lines are. The ones in the bottom towards the back of the skull close to the nasal passage if I remember right were the last to fuse together. anyways my best guess would be in that 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 year range. She has only 1 canine left other than a nub on the one side. bottom incisors were gone and the top were wore and several missing altogether. The molars were all wore down and smooth. Looked generally healthy. scars on her face and a somewhat frail look to her overall. She moved and looked old. Not unlike a old hunting dog. Pretty happy with myself over the whole thing. The last 400 yards I barely got a eye on her. she did not charge in. I had to belly crawl several yards to get a shot between some rocks. It was a moving shot, that if I had not got it off when I did I do not think it would have gone well after that.
