Mange

I just joined the site to day. I have been looking for some answers about mange. In NE Nebraska we have it bad. Every coyote I see is full of it. I have talked to several other coyote hunters and fur buyers and they all say the same they are all full of mange. I haven't shot one in the last 3 years that wasn't. Coyote #'s are way down and you have to hunt hard just to see one. In the last few years I've went from calling in 50+ to less than 20 a year.
Where does mange come from?
Will it ever leave the area?
Will the coyote #'s come back?
Should I keep shooting them?

where it comes from I am not sure. it should leave the area if the infected ones are shot and killed. coyotes should make a comback pretty easy. we have had mange in the fox in our area about 8 years ago and they are just starting to make a comeback. I would definitly keep shooting the ones infected with mange, if the females have mange when the have their litter the pups will end up with mange as well. it is a terrible parasite. each coyote you shoot with mange you will be doing it a favor

Mange is a flesh eating mite. once infected the female lays her eggs with a gestation period of 10 days. when the eggs hatch the young begin to eat on the Stratum germinativum layer of skin. the feeding causes the coyotes to scratch and claw at the cause of agitation. As they lose their hair from the stress and open sores start to form from the constant biting and scratching. They have to eat more to keep warm. These sores can become infected, compounding the problem. I have some studies on my other computer that I will try to get posted later today that go into greater detail. Beside that I am going from the top of my head.

Its nasty, everytime I see it, it makes my sick thinking of the pain they are in, especially in cold weather!

My cousin and I shot 2 last weekend and there was no hair from the hind-quarters back and stink. You couldn't stand the smell we didn't even take out pictures by it.

The numbers should eventually come back. I have heard that you will always have a portion of the population that is immune to a particulat strain of the parasite and will populate in the absence of the effected group.

One of the studies that i read said that mange in a wild population should have a twenty year cycle however texas is going on i believe 23 yrs in the areas that were infected first.

Keep shooting them the less you have running around with it the less there is too spread it. This time of year is a bad time due to so many coyotes getting together to try and breed that it spreads pretty bad.

The question on where it came from is up to debate i have heard everything from Delta Waterfowl introducing it in CA to a game ranch in TX introducing it. Most likely it is just something nature cooked up to HELP thin the predators when they get to be too plentiful.

Great info on mange I appreciate it. Will try to keep taking these mange old coyotes. It's been tough though. Weather sucks it's a 3 day weekend and the wind hasn't been under 35 mph so far and it don't sound any better for Monday. I have another ? for you coyote hunter. I see in alot of your trapping pics your dog is with you. Do you worry about your dogs getting mange? Is there alot of mange all over the midwest? This website is awesome I think my wife thinks I've been looking at porn all day.

Your dog can get mange. I just gets the dogs off the coyote as soon as possible when i run into a mange one as does Coyotehunter.

I know guys that have had their dogs get it before. Some say its easy to get rid of others say its tough.

Jamie, I think you got a website for everything!! You like a walking encyclopedia!!! LOL Good website. Does anyone know how long the mange lasted here in eastern ND?? I know it started before I moved up here in 2000. I think if I heard right I wiped out alot of the fox and some coyotes?

yeah the dog got mange this summer or at least that is what I thought it was.the test can be inconclusive at times. the do a skin scrapping and look under a microscope to see if they can find the mite. They could not find any mites but He sure looked like he had it. He pulled a mange pup out of a hole this summer and got it. I spent a bunch of money on meds and they finally got it knocked down. the vet never did come up with a diagnosis. the last bottle of pills I gave him was over a $100. He got Lyme Desease a couple of years ago as well. Poor dog. Great dog though. Loves to go and find coyotes in holes.

Some people's uncles just shoot the dog after it gets it. Remember that Prairie Ghost?
