.22-250 vs .223 Remington?

Post by Cool_Hand »

What's everyone's opinion? Personally, i'm a .22-250 fan, it has more velocity and energy and bucks the wind better. Also, I'm sometimes shooting out to 450-500 yards EFFECTIVLY (I hit a lot more than I miss. I also shoot a lot of National Match and the High Power Competion out to 1000 yards) and I like that the Federal .22-250 with 55 Grain Nosler has nearly 450 Foot Pounds of energy at 500 yards.

Remington 788 ADL is the rifle with a Leopold variable 3x9. Shoots Sub-MOA groups out to about 300 yards.

I have a 22-250 AI that was built by NRA (northern rifle accurizing), started out as a heavy barrel BDL 700 in .22-.250. when the factory barrel got tired I screwed on a Shilen Match 26" barrel. I think he called it a heavy six contour. I really like the gun alot. I had it for about 10 years with the factory barrel and just went through it about 1 1/2 years ago. I have been shooting the 55 vmax just couse I had a box on hand but built it for the 52 sierra. shoots great. could not tell you what it groups, I sight them in and take them hunting.

This one has kind of been beaten to death but i don't think there is much comparison the 250 hands down for coyote hunting.

Is that what you are asking or are thinking of competiton shooting?

I shot a 223 for 4-5 years and loved it, shot my farthest coyote with it at 527 yds in a slight wind shooting 55 gr spitzer, shot antelpoe, deer also....

But went to a 22-250 3 years ago and love it, better in the wind and alot less bullet drop. I still shot the 223 night hunting, less muzzle flash so I can see to shoot agian if needed.

i'm talking about the .22-250 for hunting. haha.

and i've shot .308s and .30-06 and .300 Win Mag for the 1000 yard.... just depends on the tournament rules. i've got 3 different model 70's that are pre-64, one in each cartridge for the competion stuff.

I just got rid of my .223, Not enough energy behind the bullet, vulnerable in the wind, and dies off past 200 yards. I went to a .243, and I am more than impressed so far this year.

I'm going to support the other one.

I'm not saying that the 22-250 isn't well suited for coyote hunting, because I believe it is.

But I went for the 223 for a few reasons. I wanted something that was cheaper to shoot, with a lot of bullet selection. I also wanted something my son could eventually learn on. Also, I had a 243 to begin with, so dropping down lower than the 22-250 and going with the 223 seemed more applicable to me. I like the gun. I am very happy shooting a 223, and being able to use my 243 on windy days.

i like my 223 and wouldnt trade it for anything that gun has been with me forever, its just a new england arms single shot break open with a real nice 3x12 leupold on it, it kills deer very effectively and coyotes real well too when isee them  !

I have a .223 700 SPS. Really like it but I have never shot a 22-250 so I can't really say. It seems to do good on coyotes. I shoot a 55 grain soft point.

I just bought a brand new 22-250 2 months ago specifically for coyote hunting. I am anxious to kill my first yote. I have shot it at a couple jack rabbits and actually missed a ferrel hog about a week ago. I love the gun to death though. It just feels so smooth, no recoil and is overall a great gun. Just better get my shot down. If anybodys curious I have the Savage Arms model 12 low profile with a detachable clip. I ended up going with a burris black diamond scope 6x24. Its my baby!!! Both are good calibers but i would go with the 250. Good luck this year everybody!! Get some good pics!!

No contest between a 22-250 and a 223. I bought a Rem 700 BDL in 22-250 when they first came out, 1965 I think. That caliber is by far the number two varmint/predator hunting caliber ever made. Like it or not, number one is the old 220 swift when it comes to factory stats.
