I want to buy a throw in the truck coyote gun. The Stevens 200 .22-250 is what I was set on buying, but the same model in .223 is on sale with the 3-9x40 Simmons scope. Maybe this should be a no brainer but I can get 1000 rds of .223 for $80 w/shipping and that's one selling point. My friends say the .22-250 will give me an extra 100 yards and with 50 grain there usually isn't much fur damage. I welcome all advice. Great price, decent caliber, and cheap ammo or the good stopping power, extra distance, and better velocity?

I just bought a Savage 22-250 Axis with Bushnell 3-9x40 scope. I use 55 gr rounds and love this gun. Doesnt have a hard recoil or nothing. I like the extra 100 yrds but I dont however enjoy the extra $$ for the shells. The ammo I shoot is about 20$ for 20 rounds. But once you have the gun sited in how often will you blow through a box of shells? For me just hunting so it wasnt to big of a factor. I decorated it with this barrel sleeve, im not sure about it yet but as far as the gun goes you cant go wrong.

Yeah I was looking at that Savage Axis, but it seems easier to get aftermarket modifications for the Stevens 200. They actually sell the Axis (still called "edge") at Cabelas for a decent price. I had just about blown off that rifle as an option, so now you gave me something else to think about haha. Thanks for the reply though.

The .223 works fine for coyotes. most guys are not comfortable at or practice at the extra distance the .22-.250 provides.

I would start checking the drop/wind charts and energy charts on both calibers. I bilieve Hornady's website will let you compare both calibers, and what is nice is you can choose the same bullet being propelled by a different caliber with the .223 and .22-250. If you decide to go the .223 route, i hope the bullets you chose (1,000 rounds for $80) shoot good out of that gun. No matter which caliber you go with, just remember that shot placement is everything!!

Those bulk bullets are just what they are Cheaper...IF you want to shoot alot then the 223w/bulk ammo but if you want to be accurate the 223 with a good load or the 22-250 with a good load 223 is a great cal. killed lots of coyotes around and over the 400 yd mark and longest is 527 dead... so if you practice and get used to the cal.that you choose both are deadly

If I were shooting that bulk ammo, it would just be for plinking. I was trying to say that the .223 ammo seems generally less expensive. I mostly shoot in Western Washington, and don't even see much to shoot over 100 yards. I'm doing some trips east of the mountains and the distances are much greater with the open country there. So I was worried the .223 might not have enough punch at the greater distances (probably up to 300). Thanks for the advice guys.

I bought the .22-250. Start breaking in the barrel tomorrow.

I have both calibers. One is a Remington 700 SPS Varmit in a 22-250 and I just bought a Savage Edge in 223.
They are both great shooters and feel that either one will do a great job out as far as I have open country.
For the money I was very impressed with the Savage. Shot 3/8 th of an inch groups at 100 yards with hand loads.

Maybe the thread should be "bolt vs semi-atuo". I happen to carry both in my vehicle and then have to decide when leaving to call.For the previous 2 yrs i have been using the .22-250. I love the bullet speed and resulting flat trajectory, which isn't really a problem with either calibur until you get out beyond 300yds, but anthing past 300 I much prefer the .22-250 for knock down power.(both hand loaded with Hornady 50 gr. V-MAX) I've recently purchased an R-15 in .223 cal and am very pleased with its accuracy and rounds are cheaper,but the main reason I choose the.223 semi-auto is for situations when multiple coyotes show up at the call.This happened last year when 4 coyotes at once came in to the call.I was pleased to get 2 of the 4 with the 4 rounds of bolt action.22-250, but i often wonder what would have happened If I would have had the .223 semi-auto. Tomorrow i'l think I'll carry the ......? ANYONE?? I still can't decide.By the way this is an awsome Predator Site! Keep it up with the the great info!!

Simple, get a .243 in an AR platform. Thats my long term plan.
