I know its rough around here so I dont have my hopes up too far. I just cant wait untill the NDCC to try it out!!

I don't want to discourage anyone from the classic, but you should try the fall hunt in williston that is put on. Fall is a great time to call coyotes. The pups are still un educated for the most part and you can learn alot from a smaller tournament, before jumping in with both feet at the classic. If it's not an option, by all means come to the classic and ask a lot of questions. There will be more knowledge in that tournament than any other tournament i am aware of in the tri-state area.

WI is probably worse than MN for killin coyotes... Last fall while pheasant hunting I saw quite a few coyotes and a LOT more sign around montevideo. I talked to a couple landowners that wanted me to kill a few that were getting into their chickens etc... I've yet to hear about problem coyotes in my area of WI. I'm sure there are some but with the number of dairy farms in my area I was hoping for more ballsy coyotes. Best thing to do is find some sign and give it a shot or drive to somewhere you can actually see coyotes!

These guys have hit the nail on the head I have access to a few thousand acres in western mn and there are alot of dogs out there and the only ones I kill are in snares or at night. They just dont seem to repond to the call like they do out in the Dakotas. I hunt ALOT an one weekend in the dakotas can be more productive than the entire season in MN, just my two cents!

You have it figured out, snares in MN are the most effective way to kill dogs!

Rhoades,

If you want to get started yet this year, and I urge you to if you are gonna try and bite off the NDCC next year, We better get started asap. I am currently laid off so nearly any day with just a bit of notice works for me. This past January was my first NDCC and I tell ya what, that to me was running with the big dogs! There are some coyote KILLERS in that tournament and that, to be honest is like just putting on the gloves and stepping in the ring with Mike Tyson(back in the day of course!) but you will never have a chance to learn as much.

Anyway, we gotta get you on the fast track to knowledge if your gonna try this(How cool would that be: Rookie coyote callers with less than a years experience win the NDCC!....BTW...dont bet your house on it.) so let me know and we can meet up and at least do a few sets, go over how I set up normally(again, not an expert by any means and still learning myself) and maybe, just maybe get lucky!!!

You can PM me contact info and we can go that route. I look forward to it. :D

Jaybic

BTW, start practicing shooting now and stop the day before you leave for the Classic!

I lived in the Bemidji, MN area for about 5 years. I did manage to shoot a few but good grief!!!! very small parcels of land, limited access to the areas I needed to be, trees (can't see anything). .... Get in the right spot though and they come in just like any other coyote. I have heard that the south west corner of the state had some numbers and I know that in the Crookston area and south along the red in the farm country the numbers have come up. Lots of guys who live in the twin cities area I am sure are pounding anything and everything near town.

Won't lie, it's a hard go in Minnesota some times but (after three years calling) the payoff is worth it. Stick with it, Have Fun and shoot some coyotes. Hope fully my pics will come through. first one was was one week ago Thursday and the other was the year before. I was slightly discouraged when I drove up the driveway of a friends (he hunts them with dogs) and he had 15 of them frozen in the snow by his house. i just had to remind myself that mine were CALLED IN. And I don't get out as much as i would like to. I have found nothing more enjoyable or satisfying in winter even if not successful, than coyote hunting or squirrel hunting (if you want to know about squirrel hunting contact me, That is one thing i consider myself as an expert at, I hunt them with my pistol, call them, and shoot the heck out of them) NOT AN EXPERT WITH 'YOTES, STILL LEARNING. (and I don't fish or snowmobile)
