pets, you did'nt bother anybody

we've given you honest advise that we all hope you go by. your vet is plain wrong!!!!!!!
sure, you "may" end up with a good one but odds are thats not gonna be the case. i sincerly hope your want of a coyote pet will pass. there is a VERY GOOD CHANCE you'll be playing with fire. that has been said here by several guys that have had LOTS of expeiriece with coyote. good luck on whatever you do and check in once in awhile
just keep in mind Timothy Treadwell

Get in touch with youre DNR office, they could put you in touch with a trapper who could get one for you... Some states allow trappers to keep live coyotes and sell them to dog pens but as far as I know a coyote cannot be taken across state lines, so you will have to get it localy..
Question though: How would you like to be kept in a jail sell and fed 3 times a day and maybe a hour spent with others.
Better yet have youre husband or mom and dad lock you in a room for a week should get the same feeling and after that time then go get a coyote if you think you just have to have one..

If I get a coyote to raise, it will be treated the same as my dogs. It won't be locked up like a prisoner. Believe me, it will get very good love and care. It won't know anything about being wild because it won't live any of it's life as wild. There is no way I would ever try and take a full grown wild animal and try and tame it or keep it locked in a cage. That would be very cruel.
I know about Timothy Treadwell. I have seen the documentary about him. He was dealing with bears in the wild. I think there would be a very big difference between me raising a coyote from a little pup and trying to live with wild bears. No comparison there at all. I might be kind of different, but I'm not nuts. Timothy Treadwell was bi-polar to say the very least. In other words, he was nuts.
Remember our dogs started out the same way coyotes did along time ago. I have the time to spend with it and a lot of love. It will turn out okay. thanks for your in-put (those of you who have cared to be helpful and polite).

I still plan on getting a coyote. Sorry I intruded on your website to ask advice. I guess I should have known better. I could have criticized you guys and called you names for hunting them. I won't do that because you have just as much a right to do that as I do to have one for a pet.
Sorry I bothered you.
I love it!
Whats the general concensus on this? Bad idea you say? Oh, well im still gonna do it.
Youll find more guys on this site with REAL, practical coyote experience than any vet, or flakey lady in Wyoming will ever have. And if the general concensus on this site about getting a coyote for a pet is a bad idea, than thats a pretty safe bet.

I'm not going to tell you wether it's a good idea or not. But I will say that it took a ton of guts to ask that question here.

Pets; I think you are getting the wrong impression from us, alot of us guys live to hunt coyotes, and some guys on here make there living hunting coyotes. And the guys that do this for a living are around them ALL the time, and see what they can and will do to a human or other animals!!! These guys are not trying to prevent you from "having a pet" they are trying to prevent another person, you or your family from getting bit by a coyote.. Alot of guys on here are VERY respecfull of a coyote cause they know what they are able to do and what they will become. Trust them, they have been around coyotes there entire lives, and studied there behavior for a long time!!! We are not trying to be rude, but trying to give you strong advice because they know!!! Why did you come to this website, to get a pro's point of view.... Trust them they know what they are talking about!!!!

My uncle caught one 20+ years ago when he was out planting. From what I remember he kept it for a few months and even as a pup it was really mean. He finally let it out and it stuck around the yard for a couple of weeks and then it finally ran off. I know he never thought of getting another one

I realize that most of you guys know alot about the habits of "wild" coyotes. You hunt and trap them. That's why I asked advice from you in the first place. I wanted to know how to "aquire" a baby coyote. I figured that of all people, some of you would know how to do this.
But most of you have had experience with adult wild coyotes--in the wild. There is a big difference between adult wild coyotes and one that has been raised from a tiny pup. I want the one to raise from a pup. Your dealings with adult wild coyotes is entirely different than what I will be doing.
I don't doubt at all that most of you do know how an adult wild coyote behaves in the wild. Not as a potential pet, but as a predatory wild animal. That's the experience most of you have probably had with coyotes.
Actually, I would also have a pet skunk if it were legal to do so in N.D. They can be bought by breeders in states where they are legal to have. But since I can't legally have one here, I won't try and get one. I would also like a pet crow, (since they are the most intelligent of all birds) but that's illegal everywhere in the United States so I guess I'll never be able to have one of them.
You guys like to hunt. That's OK by me. I like to have lots of pets and different kinds. I don't know why, but that's just me. Please try and understand that. I just want to find out how to get a coyote pup.

If some of you guys could tell us agian (pet's) when pups are typically born Maybe she can get her own, I think you should watch for a couple pairs of coyotes towards the spring find out where they den and have their pups and go dig one out for yourself. Pets you might learn about coyotes a bit more in doing it this way and it might be more rewarding to you and the pup you get your self will be only handled by you and no one other, you can pick a sex and age it if you can have it nurse on a dog bitch that will help the health of it alot...
But you need to think?? about why coyote's are not popular pets as say: wolves, skunk's coon's,beaver, muskrat's,and cats...
Keep us posted. Tbush "dog trainer, behavior Spec."

Well all that aside..................you really need to find the right one.............they are not dogs, not even a little bit. I have some experience in this. didn't go well on either occasion. Not to say that it was all bad but I can not stress enough that they are not dogs. The daily coyote............that is a story in itself. Getting one is easy it is the issues that arise once you have it.....well that is the real problem.

Well actually (and really, I am not trying to argue with you) they are dogs. Their DNA under a microscope is the exactly the same as a dog. You can breed a dog and a coyote and their offspring can reproduce.
Just like pittbulls have been bred for fighting and hunting dogs have been bred for hunting, coyotes have been wild forever. Of course they have their certain inbred qualities. And I know it will be a challage for me. I'll let you know how it turns out if I am lucky enough to get one. Meanwhile, if any of you have any ideas on how I can accomplish that please let me know. Thank you .

I would start by contacting game and fish. If that goes well, I would find out who your local government trapper is and talk to him around denning season.
I would also like to tell you about a couple books that would be a good source of info on this subject. One is The Clever Coyote by Stanley P. Young and the other is The Voice of The Coyote by Frank Dobie. Both can be obtained on amazon or any other book website.
Also, I would like to add that your comment about people with bi-polar being nuts is way off balance and completely wrong!!

If you will do your research on this like you did on a coyote as a pet you would understand that bi-polar is a actual medical issue. It is a disease just as cancer. It is a chemical embalance in the brain that is easily controlled by medications. It is usually passed down from one generation to the next and often times skips a generation.
The reason I know all of this is because I was diagnosed with bi-polar when I was thirteen.(I am 37 now) It is hard to make people understand this disease.
I believe you to be completely judgmental and not willing to take sound advice. There are a few success stories out there about coyotes as pets but for the most part it generally doesn't work out. I also believe that if it doesn't work out that people that try them as pets and turn them loose, cause alot of problems with the coyote becoming habituated to humans and causing more problems with coyotes attacking innocent children and adults. If things don't work out, I hope you will have the guts to shoot the thing where it stands and not let it effect your whole area. Just my opinion.

petsr4ever - I guess if you go forward with your plan... be sure to let us know how things turn out. I for one am certainly curious. If things go bad though, there will be alot of us saying "I told you so!"
One more question for you... Do you have small kids or other small pets?
Good luck!
