Hi all. I'm going to be looking to do some coyote hunting in South Dakota come January, preferrably around the Brookings/Sioux Falls area. I go to school at SDSU in Brookings and would like to find someone to go with that could maybe show me some land and good shooting. Anyone on this site from down in that area?

tough to get anyone to show you around a new area. I would start by getting a topo map and start looking for public ground. Not a bad idea to talk with game wardens either. sometimes they can point you to a rancher that may want some help. Nothing beats knocking on doors as well. find some spots on a map you would like to hunt. go out in the day time and check the area out. find some spots you may wnat to locate from. then go in at night and try to locate coyotes from the road. If you find some coyotes, find out who owns the land and get permission. It is a lot of work and can take sometime to get enough areas set up to make a decent weekend out of it. the good guys stay on it and are constantly getting new areas to hunt.

Well put. My old hunting log and contacts in ND would be worth a pretty penny to someone that wanted to take it all over and get after it.

So can i give you my first then brad if i ever have one I also have a penny that looks realy pretty that i might be able to negotiate for that north dakota log book

You guys just think i'm a cheap whore don't you. A bottle jack might get you a landowner but not everything that i used to hunt.

PG, i got something better than a shiny penny how about 2 shiny quarters. they are bigger & less likely to lose them. in all joking put aside. i did that last yr. with the log book & door to door knocking, (i am a Baptist missionary preacher so door to door knocking meeting people for the first time & rejection is not new to me, been there done that.) is very valuable. the landowner gets to meet you although i have done a lot on the phone contacts also. but i keep a log on their likes & dislikes. there are some that want me off the land two (2) weeks before pheasant season, or deer season. or some bird season also. in any case here in ND you don't have to have permission to hunt land that is NOT POSTED, but i find it better if you get permission, it is a better ease of mind for me. at least if somebody would be shooting at me i know it would not be the land owner. free tip also to everyone, maybe you all already know but it is a good idea to put all of their (landowners) phone #'s in your cell phone, free tip won't charge for that one.

Babtist Missonary?????!!! Well no whiskey for tango i guess!!! But good point the more you write down the better i always wrote the name and number down and dislike or likes on my 1:100,000 maps so i could keep them straight. Makes it easy to have them highlight there boundaries also.

I'll charge for that one if you use that tip you owe me on Jack and Seven the first time you meet me after that it's negotiable!

I give them the map and a highlighter, have them color out there property. Also, if possible get them to write down all the neighbors names and numbers.

You are in a pretty good area. If you are in College your money situation probably isn't the best for driving long distance Just start knocking on doors and explain what you want to do. More than likely they will let you hunt a few coyotes or tell you where to go. Get a walkin area map also. The Big Sioux River has coyotes if you can get in there to hunt them. Pretty tough when deer season is on though. If you can drive farther East, the James River has lots of coyotes along tributaries. Just take a day and go talk to the farmers and ranchers. I always like to go and talk to them personally instead of call on the phone. It just seems to work better for me that way. Good hunting this Winter.

Thanks for the tips guys. Jerry, I'll have to give the James River area a try as soon as I get settled in in the next week or two. Might have to make a stop at Kjergaard Sports looking for a new rifle. Still trying to decide between Savage's .223 and .22-250. Don't care what the stock looks like, just needs to be a good shooter.

If you are looking on geting a Savage, .22.250AI is the guy to talk to.

He has a custom .22-250 built on a Savage frame. Don't know a ton of details on the gun but I know it shoots well!!

Last I talked to him, he was going to get rif of it cause he just don't use the darn thing.

SE and SW of brookings along the big sioux has alot of coyote density in that area. I'm sure many will allow you to call coyotes in those areas. Concentrait on the cover along the drainages and also slough ground back in a ways. If your willing to walk get into those rarer eastern coyote hide aways look for areas that are 2-5 sections with no roads going through it all. Work areas like those and you should have some decent results.

Sounds like land around the Big Sioux is a pretty good place to be! I've recently got some land somewhere around Clark, SD to hunt on, which is fairly close to the Big Sioux. I'll let you guys know what comes off of it!
