Got my "first"

I was deer hunting this morning on a ridgeline when i saw two yotes running the opposite ridge. They were moving along pretty good. I got my crosshairs on the big boy in front. Had to fight off the shakes for a moment (we aint used to 5 degree wind chills around here). I let out a very loud grunt on my deer call and both froze in their tracks. Didnt know if it would work but took the chance. Squeezed off a round and dropped him on his rearend fast but he bolted back up and took off. His buddy bailed off the ridge toward me but i lost him in the thick brush halfway down and heard him cuttin a trail. After a few minutes i made my way up the other ridge and found my victim about 20 yrds from where he caught the round to the neck.
Thats my first coyote since i was 14 and picked off a cripple. This one got the juices flowin pretty good. Soon as deer season ends im hittin them hard. Got permission from two cattle farmers nearby to hunt their pastures and woods. Hoping its gonna be a fun year !

For years there was a fella that worked on and sighted in guns for everybody that used to keep them thinned out real good. I remember him coming by our shop when i was younger with the bed piled high with coyotes. He was a yote killin machine. I never asked but heard rumors he tied up stray cats and used them whining to draw them in. Must have worked. He cant hunt anymore due to sickness. The yotes have come back with a vengeance. Used to never see them during the day but now they are running thick. They been killin pets and running deer all over our valley.

the tying up cats doesnt work too well

. a big pain in the ass

. i have tried it. i caught 2 wild barn cats which i tied in the truck bed with baling twine. when walking to the stand i had to drag the cat while it bawled, whined, tried to scratch me, and got tangled in the sage. when i got set up on the stand i tied it up in front of me and got back to call

. then the damn thing went to sleep under the sage as soon as i started to call

. it threw a fit the whole time i was dragging it back to the pickup. then dumb me figured i should try it on the second stand, guess what happened? same thing as the first stand. needless to say i left 2 cats on a hillside in the gas hills of wyo and will not try that again.

you missing a step in there with the cats. They need to be provoked if you know what i mean

I dont want to post exactly how to do it, because of the image it might portray

It has something to do with a special collar

I dont know how he did it but i heard some guys who used to go with him tellin me he did it pretty often. They said coyotes would come runnin from all directions. That is ol' timer talk though.
(no disrespect to you ol' timers

)
What experiences have you fellas had with live bait ? I might need to start a new thread for that one.

hey lyonch i never thought of a special collar

we run hounds and have collars lying around that probably put out enough to light a christmas tree maybe they would get a cat to movin

i might have to try it

Live bait is illegal in most states and is also fairly unproductive due to time and energy to set it up.

O man i can just picture the look on some PETA nuts face getting on here and reading the last couple posts on this one.
Could do a commerical something like this:
30 foot of bailing twine---.12 cents
4 band aids for the cat scratches-----.34 cents
The look on the PETA nuts face after hearing your using a cat for live bait.-----
PRICELESS
Love it..

If PETA heard about half the stuff ive seen and heard of people doin around here they would have a stroke !

Waaaaay too many good 'ol boys runnin around here. Hard to do any hunting cause most of them have ticked off landowners so much you have to really know somebody to get permission.
