hey guy's kind of a wierd topic but o'well. have a good friend that has hunted hard his whole adult life. he's 60 now. he's never killed a coyote or fox alone although he tries to quite often. he lives in a good coyote area and travels 40 miles each day to work and he say's he never see's coyotes on the way. i travel his route often and see coyotes from the road 1/4 of the time. he just does'nt have " IT" whatever it is???he has mostly given up hunting with me because i think he gets pissed when we do go out together and i'm the one who shoots the game even though i give him first option to spots. he calls me the luckiest s.o.b. and i have a horse up my ass. i don't think i'm any luckier then the next guy but i do hunt hard and try to interpit what i see one day into the next time out which he does not do. than there are guy's (and gals ) that just have" IT".( mitch). they learn real quick and just have a positive attitude about the whole experience. i' would bet $ that i could put my buddy in mitch's area that he would not get or even see a coyote in a couple days of hunting. anybody else have similar buddies or opinions on "IT". Gene Wensel once wrote a chapter about positive thinking. i kinda agree

My Uncle and I took one of his bird hunters on a guided coyote hunt. The first stand I called in a big coyote in to about 35 yards square in front of us and the guy couldn't see him. The dog stood there for about 10 seconds and finally bugged out. We were telling him the whole time "here he comes, take him take him" and he just couldn't see him. I had to show him the video because he thought we were lying to him. I called in about six more coyotes that day some up to 150 yards and he never saw one of them. He didn't have IT. I think he needed GLASSES. I'll never do a guided hunt again. To much pressure when your getting paid to find coyotes and the guided person can't see them. Good thing I was videoing.

Generally though,oh ya,those guys(people)are out there.Some groups,ie,PETA,are riddled with them.

I've seen it many times i have seen a lot of successful hunters in other game (birds, deer, ect) that just couldn't get a handle on the "IT" with coyote hunting. Someone with good "instincts" will go a long way without studying coyote hunting and if you couple that with studying there game they are deadly

Buck's I agree 100%, I have a good buddy we've hunted together20years ,ducks deer, bear,antelope and even competion huntingand hes a great shot....... He killed his 1st coyote the 1st time out on the 1st stand that I called in and he didn't shoot till it was 5 yds away ( never saw it coming ) and 4 years later and many coyotes later his AR is still a virgin I've had coyotes come across open country and he can't find them or can't find them in his scope or the gun didn't go off,??? found out he was pulling the bolt open just enough to see if it was loaded then the damn thing won't fire, or simply MISS He know calls me the coyote hog cause if he ain't shooting I am, That reminds me?? the very first set with his new rifle 2 come in 1 @ 100 and the other tagging close behind, He misses the standing at 100 and then a jam well TB rolled them both ie;coyote hog Now this guy can spot a duck swinging low across the water at 1000 yds and spot a hen pheasant sneaking thru the cover BUT??????????? "IT"ain't there as far as coyotes go

I have to agree also but in kinda the opposite way if that makes any sense. I have hunted with the type of guys that just "cant see 'em" and it drives me nuts but I do have one buddy that I swear could call a coyote while on a raft in the middle of the pacific ocean. He's just a LUCKY kind of guy. It doesnt matter what your hunting with him the deer will always run his way, the pheasant always flushes right next to him but mostly just coyotes and fox. Its just nuts. He is a damn good hunter tho, I certainly will admit that but its stuff like just recently he drove up a real slippery hill and at the top gets out to unlock the front hubs.(yes, old school lock outs). He figures that while he is out(engine running and everything, he will get ready to hunt and decided to check the fox pro and make sure its working. Fires it up and right over the hill, a bunch of coyotes light up. He turns the car off, runs up the embankment next to the road, sits down and glasses and 6 coyotes are on the way in. ends up with 2. That sorta shit happens to him all the time it seems like.

Yeah, i know a couple of guys with that kind of luck hunting. I do ok i guess. Im not hurtin the animal populations any but i manage. I also know of a few that could hunt a spot 364 days and never see anything and somebody else hunt it that 1 day and kill a monster. Just goes like that sometimes.

I usually do pretty good but my last few times out I am begining to feel like the "IT".
But I do have some friends that have that problem year round so I guess I can consider myself lucky and hope that it is short lived with my luck.

i like all the feed-back but my real intent was what is (IT)?????????? what makes some "luckier" than others. what makes some inherently{sp} better???. i know some that have never hunted elk but would put them against others that have done it for years unsuccesfully and win even though the ones that have done it should know more. like i said, kind of a wierd topic but there are some i've met, even young kids that i just know are going to turn out to be good hunters and am usually right. then there are some that as hard as they try can seem to get IT.

The best answer I can come up with is woodsmanship. Some people are just natural born hunters and don't really have to think to be good at it. Being a fast learner helps too. It's the same with tracking, some people really have to work at it, while others seem like they can spot a bent blade of grass in a field while on a dead run.

I feel one of the of the reasons some have "IT" and some don't is. The ones that do are more relaxed, collected,confident, and so on. The ones that don't are trying to hard; moving a lot trying to see something, rushing a shot.. and so on

I agree. I honestly think when it comes to dumb luck "IT" is just that, a freak batch of luck. "IT" could last for a while or pass in a flash. As for those who consistently succeed at what they do i think "IT" is the fact that they have an understanding of what they are doing even if they dont realize it or couldnt explain it to you. Lots of things can come naturally to a person. They dont know why or how.

Or maybe im full of BS Who knows ?

I don't think luck has a damn thing to do with "IT"... And those who blame there poor luck on sucsess, and call it lucky when others sucssed are the example of the guys without "IT"

There is a reason why I shoot the biggest deer (in our small group) every year, there is a reason why 3 years running I got the biggest Antelope....
There is a reason why in the spring when I'm fishing uncharted waters and my buddies are calling to find more fish........ Time and Effort!!!!!!!

This year I still hunted in the woods for 8 days logged a total of 100.5miles on a GPS, and seen more bucks than anybody else in our group, Geeez I wounder why The guys I hunt with (deer hunting)don't get it, they don't pay attention to whats going on, and they don't log in the memory banks (or keep a paper log) and don't use years past for future results....

I think coyote hunting is some what the same way, but they keep pulling crap out of there furry butts to make me question all my results I think stand location is HUGE, going into stand, stand placement, the area your hunting, and just being able to drive down the road and say there is a coyote over that hill and I'm going to walk out there and put myself in a possition to kill it....

This is my second year of HARDCORE coyote hunting, last year I averaged 18% on stand/response for coyotes, and alot of them got away last year . This year I'm at 34% on stand/response, and alot less have got away (I got a couple of good gunners this year). This year has been an eye opener and I'm looking forword to the future.

So I ask myself, do I have "IT"????? I think any body that has "IT" dosn't tell every body that they are a great hunter or say "I got IT" thats the job of the guys who go hunting with you, and in the results of your hunts! There is a fine line between posting pics, and telling your stories, and being cocky.......... And no, I don't think I have "IT"

Yeah, the guys who put in the work are the ones that usually succeed. Some of them take to what they are doing without realizing how good they are at it. These are usually the guys that are called "lucky". Seems like it all comes together and falls in their laps but they actually know what they are doing and make things happen. They just dont run around claiming to be a pro.

I agree with woodmanship. Some guys just have an instinct of what the animals want to do or are doing. I use to do a lot of hunting with a guy that would pass up a perfect wooded draw and then call in a open stubble field and kill coyotes every time i questioned his stand choices. He use to just say this looks "doggy" and then go kill one out there. I learned alot about stand location from him he definetly had "IT"
