But has anyone ever thought about this....

I used to build Goose nesting boxes, Wood Duck Boxes and Mallard Hen Houses...

Has anyone ever thougt about helping the Coyotes out alittle. I have been pondering this awhile. Tell me what you think....

I was thinking of taking a plastic 55 gallon drum cutting two 12" holes in either end and then filling the drum with Straw. Then inserting about 8 to 10' of 12" colvert pipe in the holes and then burrying the whole kit and cabodle with a skidsteer. I might be taking this to the extreme but why not.... Just my way of giving back...

I thought of letting acouple of thousand tame rabbits loose ayear, but my little girls would go nuts....

I was kinda pondering the same somewhat idea but I wonder if a coyote would call it home or some other critter but it may be worth a try

I do not think you could get a coyote to use it. Give it a try and let us know.

just wondering how early do coyotes have there dens picked out??

I am sure there are so many variables (climate, geography, elevation, age of coyote, etc.) that it would be nothing more than a guess. Breeding is done around the end of February and I would imagine they would start cleaning out holes as soon as possible. I believe April 12th is the magic day that the bulk of the pups are gong into the hole.

Just out of curiousity is how do they dig a new den in frozen ground ???????? Levi and I have had quite a few talks about this subject and all i could think about was do they use the same den again or find a miracle way to thaw the ground and dig like a badger??

The same dens can be used for decades. Coyotes often times take over other animals holes and just remodel them a little.

There is a lot of dens that get reused or just extending badger holes, or just using a cave in the badlands for instance.

thats what I was thinking, I doubt they have the abilities to dig through frozen ground. I know I would be to lazy to do it.

will coyotes only use underground dens? will they use culverts? old rotten tree logs?

I got the culvert Idea from a episode earlier this year....

I was working my lab up a ditch looking for pheasants, when he started working a large culvert real heavy when from deep in the culvert came a real high pitched growl and then I called him off of hit... be a coon, fox, or a coyote I dont know, but I didnt what my lab to find out either...

I do belive that you would definately have to set the man made den, up in the summer and let them have plenty of time to get used to it... It possibly would take a couple of years to get used.... but it only takes once just to give a little back...

I have read of denners taking coyotes out of old hollowed out logs.

Coyotes have been documented using all sorts of things for dens, culverts, hollowed out logs, or just a real thick clump of brush. The majority however use a underground den

coyotes dont use the same den every year is is more like every other year they will use the same den and alot of times the den is dug out from a exiting hole like a badger hole, and dont walk up to close on a den or they will move there pups, i dont think a coyote will use a home made den because they are so picky of human sent

what if the home made den sat over time, I wonder if they would use it then??
