Tim, I wish we could say we've been able to train our beagles and get our one over being gun shy but life has kept us much too busy for rabbit hunting...unfortunately.
My husband got a new job that moved us into town (hopefully not for much longer) and he's too busy with his predator control job now to really even think about rabbit hunting or come up with the time to dedicate to it. He already had coyote hunting/trapping on his mind but now it is literally all that is on his mind!! lol His focus as far as dogs go is more on his coyote hunting dog(s) for decoying, denning, tracking etc. Every now and again when we have them out in the country giving them some extra special exercise they'll find some rabbit scent or see a rabbit and get pretty riled up but they would still need lots of practice and training to be any good I shook my head at them last time...talk about totally missing where the rabbit had just went Still fun to listen to them though
We have also since gotten a Tri-Tronics system to use for training when we have all the dogs out We all know how hounds can be at times! Although you can tell they understand the collars now...as soon as you put them on the dogs they all behave like little angels! lol
My husband's next system he'd like to get would be GPS collar Especially with his 2 pups he has to start training this year!
So I guess to sum this up...our beagles are just pan lickers! lol We still love the heck out of them though and they all get along well with our son...so that's a huge bonus to keeping them around!

Re: Beagles
That's too bad, but at least you are taking them out to run around which is better than just sitting around and getting fat.LOL
As for the Garmin its a wonderful tool and wouldn't run my dogs with out it.. Also a heads up, I will be selling my Astro 320 and two collars sometime soon incase your hubby might be interested.. For the type of running and number of dogs I need to up date to the Alpha.....
As for the gun shy dog, try using beef liver fried and cut into chunks as a treat, get dogs mind on something else other than gun going bang. Any time you have a neg. you need to come up with a positive. Now get them dogs out running.

Re: Beagles
Thanks Tim
They still spend too much time penned up or limited to the back yard...but like I said hopefully we'll be out of town before too long...we're both itching to get out in the country again!
I will let him know about the Garmin! I don't know which one he's been eying. He just might be interested in that since he'll really only need the GPS for his pups.
When we get back out in the country and can spend some more time with her we'll definitely be doing our best to make sure to help her have a good experience with guns. Treats definitely help
