I know we are not in states where Mt. Lion hunting is huge, but South Dakota has increasing numbers all of the time and landowners can hunt them year round with no limits. I saw one not to long ago while going out to feed, but haven't seen it again. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with calling them, I've gone out and had a couple coyotes come in, but no lions. I'm not sure if he's even still in the area but there is a Season in the Black Hills for Jan - March and I plan on checking that out for New Years.

If anyone has any experience in this area I would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Never attempted it the only thing i know to tell you is probably and hour per stand. I will try to see if i can find some more info. One of the lions shot in ND this year was called in!

You need to look for cat sign like scat or ground scratches or places they urinate against a tree. Once there terr. is found you will need an electric caller with lion vocals (WT) and spend at least one hour or more on stand. Place the caller away from you cause they can and will come in from almost any direction and will come right in to the caller..Good hunting.. Tim A.

I will try all of that, I don't get out into the hills often but one of my calling partners lives outhere, so I might have him to some extensive scouting for such things & I might make a run around Christmas since the season starts 1-1-09.

One of the lions shot in ND this year was called in!

I talked to the guy that shot it, he used Mountain Lion vocalizations to call it in. They set up by one coulee and called for about an hour, didn't see anything so they only moved a short distance into another drainage. They gave that spot about the same amount of time then stood up. There was a Lion right near where they set up the first time looking at them. It didn't run and they were able to shoot it. Apparently it was pretty windy so they didn't move far between stands which is lucky. I'm assuming that one was watching them the whole time so I would do a lot of glassing for one sneaking in. You will probably have the advantage of snow so I would look for tracks before setting up. I've never called Lions but if there was snow I would say you could follow a fresh track and set up on each coulee it might have held up in. If you don't get a response keep following it. The hard part would probably be to find a fresh set of tracks. I would think a combination of Lion vocalizations and adult deer distress would be the most effective. I think Fox Pro has that sound.

If you looking for a really good mule deer in distress sound that is 100% real and amazing in sound quality i know jamie has the sound for sale in the online store. If i remeber right this was a sound that he got himself!! The more i listen to it the more it sounds like a very good lion call!!

That picture is a picture of a lifetime!!!! I have never heard or seen of 3 lions traveling like that. I always thought they were by themselves until it was time to breed then they would find a mate. Wouldn't that be a suprise if you call in 3 mountain lions at one time and there you sit with a single shot rifle

This guy was hit by a police car on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, pretty nice cat. I just can't believe how many people are seeing in the prairie land of Western South Dakota.
