New Territory

Post by Mountainman »

Last week I stopped at a ranch house and asked permission to hunt coyotes. I was warmly welcomed, informed where most of the coyotes seem to be hanging out, and shown a map of the boundaries and the roads leading into the areas. This ranch is broken into two parts: the southern part is about 10 miles further down the highway and is slightly smaller ( ~17,000 acres), and the larger is where the ranch house is located (~ 19,000 acres). I went out this morning and took the northern road that was suppose to lead to the northern-west part of the larger ranch. It led to another ranch so I stopped at the house to ask directions. I was told how to get to the part I needed, and told that if I would like to hunt his ranch for coyotes that I would be more than welcomed; but it isn't as big - only 15,000 acres. Nice thing is that it borders the first ranch. That gives me about 35,000 acres to hunt coyotes in. Walked for almost 6 hours today - saw seven coyotes (all too far to shoot), several dens, forgot how many jack rabbits and gophers. Oh yeah, tomorrow I will be back out and look over more area.

I wasn't really trying. I was more or less trying to cover as much territory as possible, and I was afoot. The next time I go out at least I know where some of the roads are and can use my truck. All I can say is "Thar's a lot of countryside out there in them hills." Even though I spent most of the day, I didn't get to cover even a third of the ranch. I still have to check out the southern part, but that is on my "to do" list plus the northern ranch (although I did make arrangements to hunt it this winter).
