Whitetails vs Coyotes

Post by Mountainman »

Don't know how many of you get Field and Stream, but in the June 2009 issue is a very good one page article on coyotes and whitetail fawns. In South Carolina they did a research from 2006 to 2008 by placing a transmitter in pregnant does. When the fawn was born the transmitter went with it. Results of 60 fawns:abandonment (1), unknown predators (2), bobcats (6), coyotes (28 confirmed and 7 probables). This about 80%. In Georgia, 29,000 acres were used. 11,000 acres were cleared of coyotes, and on 7,000 acres, they were left alone. In the fall, the fawn to doe ratio was 7 fawns per 100 does where the coyotes were present. In the area where coyotes had been removed: 72 fawns per 100 does. The rest of the article was how to increase the fawn to doe ratio, with only a small amount given to coyote hunting (2 sentences). Now tell this to all who don't want us out shooting coyotes.

If the deer population is low then yes to many coyotes canbe a problem but in most areas its just the oppisite to many deer and not enough coyotes to keep the numbers down.

Most people don't realize just how many full grown deer and antelope that coyotes kill each year.

This time of the Yr, it is easy to see , yes the Coyotes are going to feed on Fawns. it is when the Coyote has there pups to feed, and the fawns are born.
the coyotes are lord in by the afterbirth a the doe will hav them lay still in high brush and fields. I see more problems with Coyotes taking down lambs this time of Yr. But this is Pa. and the population of Coyotes is still on the rise. good Topic though.
It is, What it is.
