Re: Locateing coyotes
If the pup was a noticeable difference in size it could have been from a orphaned litter nearby that the female took in, could be a double den ect ect .Coyotes have about the best welfare system there is so it's tough to say.

Re: Locateing coyotes
Lehnar and Mitchel have both done interesting studies on vocalizations. when they say not all coyotes will respond, as a general rule they are talking about the subordinate coyotes in the area. the alpha male for instance may respond 50% of the time and the subdonimate female in area may respond less than 10% of the time. as far as the over locating, when they do these type of studies they are locating constantly with sirens, recorded howls and open reed howls for months if not years regulary from the same location. those coyotes seem to generaly respond over long periods of time for the purpose of those studies. I get mine located and slip in and kill them, so I do not get a lot of long term feed back on the over use of locating. I have heard that in the short term the rule of thumb is 3 times but after three times most of the guys I am talking with are ADC and pretty much have them pinpointed by the third time they got them to respond.

Re: Locateing coyotes
in the past 10-12 days, i've been out 1 hour before light locating coyotes in n.w. minn. i have not had 1 responce
. all spots have had plenty of sign. (not a lack of ears). this summer when out in n.d, i was suprised if i DID'NT get a responce. one morning i stopped 7 times and got responces on all 7. i'm wondering if the presents of wolves have kept them quite where i've been lately.

Re: Locateing coyotes
What are you useing to locate with?? E-caller or hand howlers. I found when useing hand howlers some of my coyotes are a little fussy to which one I howl with, so I may stop to locate and use any of the three before moveing on.. Here I also found I have the best luck when the sky is dirty or total cloud cover and the worst time to be out is with a full moon and clear sky..
Another thing the coyotes maynot be in the area where you are finding sign but possably the next section or two over.. I usually go out all nite to locate so I can find where the coyotes are bedding for the day and where they are doing there feeding, which maybe the same area or may not... It also would'nt be a bad idea to bring another set of ears along to help locate.. I usually take the wife and son along and have them just point in the direction the howls are comeing from and then I just move around and get a little closer so I can hear them and get a idea of whats there.. In my area I find most of them in or close to CRP fields or big sections (2x2 or bigger).. I think about the farthest we can here them howl is around a mile to a mile and a half if its calm out and not much road traffic..
