A little rusty

Post by Critrgtr »

Well yesterday was the season opener for antelope with rifle here in Montana so I packed up the kids and the wife after I got off work to go out for the evening to see if I could stumble upon one. And we werent hardly a 1/4 of a mile into the property I was hunting on and something got my eye. So I stopped and looked and there was a coyote about 300 yards out. Well it was a no brainer for me. My mind went from antelope hunting to coyote hunting. (Well kinda anyway) More like just coyote shooting. Not as fun but will work. Anyway the kids have never been with me before when I have shot a coyote so I had them sit down back behind me a ways and plug there ears and I told them to watch the coyote. I sat down and aimed and squeezed the trigger. I hit him but not where I wanted to hit him and spun and took off running to the right. I could see through the scope that it was a pretty solid hit just a little high. I blew on my song dog and he slowed up for a min. The bad thing I was thinking to myself is my kids and wife are with me and my kids are 9 and 6 both girls and the last thing I want to do is turn them away from hunting by having them see an animal suffer. So I waited for him to stop completly before I shot again and when he did I shot again. This time I went right under him. But he didnt run so i jacked another one in and shot again this time dropping him in his tracks. I turned around and looked at my kids and they were grinning from ear to ear and said that That was Awesome Dad.... :D So at least my fear of me being a little rusty on my shooting and having to shoot 3 times I dont think scared them away from hunting. But since that was my first coyote I have shot at since April Having to shoot that many times I guess I will let it slide. Hopefully you all will let me slide to.

Great story and post!! I bet there's not a better feeling in the world than to see your kids enjoying what you love to do as well :D

Good post. Just use the shooting as a lesson for your kids to use good techniques and to always continue to harvest your animal even if you make a bad shot or miss on your first. Now get back to the shooting bench.
