Heard rumours that there was a mt lion hanging around the grassy butte area. So I figured I woud get out before deer season and see if I could call one in. Started calling in the area that it was seen. Nothing so walked down to the bottom of the creek and found some tracks. Started walking down the creek went about a mile and started calling again no cat. Went back to the pickup and found a high hill looked over the country wondering where it could of gone. Spotted a large draw and decieded to check it out. Made a 40 mile trip around with the pickup. Was going down the trail where I was going to make my 3rd stand and 20 yards in front of me he came across the trail. Dont think he had a clue that I was there. Tryed to lip sqeak the lip sqeaker was not working. So put out a soft wistle he stoped about 40 yards and shot him. Now the only thing to do is wait until next year so I can try and get another one. The cat was a female that weighed about 98 Lbs. Biologist said it was around 3 to 4 years old. Some times it better to be lucky than good.

Sixth Cat Taken in Zone 1, Two More Closes Zone
A 3-year-old, 92-pound female mountain lion taken Nov. 19 by a deer hunter northwest of Grassy Butte in McKenzie County is the sixth cat taken in zone 1. If two more are taken from zone 1 before March 31, 2010, the quota of eight will have been reached and the season within zone 1 will close immediately.

When an eighth lion is taken, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department will notify media outlets via a press release announcing the close of the season in zone 1. Hunters can also check the number of lions taken in zone 1 by accessing the Game and Fish Department website at gf.nd.gov.

Zone 1 includes land south of ND Highway 1804 from the Montana border to the point where ND Highway 1804 lies directly across Lake Sakakawea from ND Highway 8, crossing Lake Sakakawea then south along ND Highway 8 to ND Highway 200, then west on ND Highway 200 to U.S. Highway 85, then south on U.S. Highway 85 to the South Dakota border.

Zone 2, with no quota, is the remainder of the state and is open through March 31, 2010.

The mountain lion season is open only to North Dakota residents. A furbearer or combination license is required.

Here is a photo of a cougar killed 5 miles west of Hermosa, SD.
The guy who shot it is 6 foot tall and weighs about 220 lbs.
He was in a deer stand and saw the cat pass him downwind.
He then saw it pass him upwind.
When the cat passed him again (closer this time) downwind, he knew that it
was hunting him.
So, boom.... After viewing this do you feel safe in the woods?

When the cat passed him again( this was the third time it passed) (closer this time) downwind, he knew that it
was hunting him. ( I think one pass is all I could Take ) One Hugh Cat 3 Times is Nerves of Steel.

The seventh mountain lion killed in Unit 1 this season was taken by an Alexander man Saturday.

Stephanie Tucker, furbearer biologist for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, said Sam Irwin shot the 2-3- year-old female lion Saturday about 30 miles southwest of Alexander in McKenzie County while calling coyotes.

The season in Unit 1, which encompasses the Badlands area, will close immediately if one more mountain lion is killed.

The quota for that unit is eight while there is no quota for Unit 2 which is the remainder of the state.

Tucker said the female cat weighed 86 pounds and showed no evidence of having had a litter.
