Fun Night

Post by 1Shooter »

I've been getting the itch bad lately, so a friend and I headed out to try to find some coyotes after work. By the time we had gotten to our stand, the sun had just gone down. I was facing west just over the edge of a hill over-looking a HUGE flat area and my friend Jon was facing east just on the east side of the same hill I was on. We saw some fresh tracks going into and out of the pasture we were in, and after sitting and glassing (with binoculars this time) for about 2-4 minutes without seeing anything, two coyotes start barking and howling at us to our southeast. After I start up with the jackrabbit distress, the coyotes stopped howling and barking all together. Alright, they're in hunting mode and on the move! I thought I maybe heard something behind me and to my left after a couple minutes, but couldn't see over the top edge of the hill. I figured, if anything comes over the top of this hill, Jon will see it. After calling on and off for a few minutes, I hear a loud BANG! behind me. Alright, Jon must have got one! I hit the ki-yi, but hear no more shots. After a bit I get together with Jon and he tells me what he saw. He said that there was one coyote that came just to the top of the hill, saw him, then bolted going the other direction. We stepped it off later and it was only 30 steps from where he was laying. He says he heard the barbed-wire fence 'twang' and heard snow crunching before he saw the coyote. He said about 5 min. after seeing this first coyote, he picked up on two other coyotes that had hung up on top of a small knoll about 350 yards directly east of us. It was one of these two that he shot at and missed. I'm guessing that these two coyotes hung up because they saw our vehicle through a shallow draw that we couldn't see from where we were sitting. We only saw this draw once we got back to the car. When Jon was telling me about what he saw, we heard one coyote not too far off giving us the "warning" howl/bark that I'm sure some of you have heard. There were a few very large packs that we heard light up as we were thinking about leaving. All in all, it was a fun night out. My first at calling in three at once, and my buddy's first at seeing a coyote called in! He says I've got him hooked
