The right gun
I am from MN and would like some opions on the right gun. Dont want to ruin the pelts but do want to kill coyotes, foxes, and hopefully a bobcat or two. I would guess no shot over 300yrds. mostly 150 or so?

over-all, i'd pick a .223. most that worry about pelt damage seem to favor the 52 hollow point. don't overllok the.222 rem.its a great little cartridge out to about 300.

If you're are just starting out whatever you own that will go bang above a 22 rimfire. If you have been doing this for awhile and looking for a better caliber in your neck of the woods can't beat a 204 shooting 32 gr V-max

.223 Rem. would be a really good choice, there are lots of factory rifles chambered in that caliber along as a large variety of factory ammo as well. That can be a real plus if your not a hand loader.

Check your states laws too! We in Mich have laws requiring rim fire in the southern part and for the night season. I like a 22 mag for the close work, but a 223 is great for the open country. A 223 is cheap to reload, surplus ammo is readily avail, you can go semi or bolt. I have a dual purpose competition AR-15 and varmint gun. The scope is quick disconnect, 20 bbl. match, 5,20, 30 rnd mags. I load 62gr fmj bullets for coyotes, no expansion. For Match I load the 69-75gr bullets, molly'd up to preserve my barrel.
