Long Double

Post by Prairie Ghost »

Talked to a rancher on the road friday night that said they were hearing some coyotes in thier calves and he was pretty sure they were missing two. Saturday night was fairly calm with the SE wind i needed to call the valley so off i went. There was approx 800 cows calving in this valley from what i was told so the coyotes had a good chunk of land to be spread out on. An hour before sunset found me glassing the valley hoping to pick them up to no avail. I tried locating but got the same results so i figured i would give it one shot and see i had any takers or at least get an idea of where they want to be. I started with the normal distress and after 10 minutes started with a little coyote vocalization but nothing fancy. Nothing! I was glassing when i finally spotted a coyote around 600yds out just laying in the sage i think it had been bedded there the whole time. I tried about everything to get it to close the distance but that wasn't happening. I could here the jeapordy music playing as i tried to figure out what to do next. I finally made the decision to go T Bush on it and just sneak up and shoot it if i could. I made if off the hill alright and started the sneak. When i reached where i knew i couldn't get any close i started trying to range which took for ever damn range finder is junk!! I finally got two reading one of 374 and one of 373 so i went with it and dialed her in. A few ki-yi's and she stood up squeeze....................bang flop but with some spinning and another coyote jumps up and heads out i start to search for the other coyote and get it spotted give the scope two more clicks which at that range equals 24 more yds squeeze..................bang flop no spinning. I get up there to see that they are both really mangy females both unbred but none the less not going to work on the calves anymore.
Here is a few pics of the stand and an ear off of one and the tail off the other. Sorry about the pic but it was a long MUDDY walk back and there wasn't a tail on the other one to cut off. One pic is at about 2oclock and the other 10 oclock from where i tried calling. I spotted the coyotes just on the back side of the shiny spot on the first pic in the middle and snuck down to the line of heavy sage that goes across the middle of the pic and took my shots.

I love it. Every time we shoot one even if its mangy we always drag it back for proof. So I really like the idea of just the tail or the ear. Throw them in your pocket and off you go.

Critr, if they ever question how many you are killing you just askem where you want me to lay them and make a dead pile for them. About one time and they will never question a guy again. I had one producer tell me he wanted 20 dead ones on the end of his driveway thru denning season, at about 18 he couldn't stand the smell to get his mail and he called to say he was a believer. Your only as good as your last dead coyote. These in the pic are the one that had no fur value, broke out, mange etc. This little area it was still almost 95% of everything taken.

I do the exact same thing it's always nice when they find calf or lamb kill for them to drive by and see a bunch of dead coyotes, it reminds them that you are out there trying
