Some people have all the luck!!! Marty!!!

Post by mitchkvernum »

Ok maybe its not ALL luck, but i guess Marty just has " IT " when it comes to this paddlefishing.. I have been casting for two years and have snagged zero, yes zero paddlefish.. I would guess in the ballpark of 300-400 casts.. Marty on the other hand seems to MAGICALLY snag his fish with an average of 5 casts per year.. .. Its un believable!

So after a long day of casting saturday with no fish I decided I wanted to hit it hard Sunday, as weather was nicer. I called Marty up and told him I was ready to roll! He didnt think i was going to be calling.. .. We packed up the gear and headed to our " Honey hole ".. or atleast Martys.. We arrived and I immediately started casting. 10 casts in my reel broke, And I called marty over for some help.. He proceeded to saying these EXACT words..." Wow! I hope I dont catch a ninety pound paddler on this broken reel.. And he jokingly casted his line across the river.. YUP YOU GOT IT!!! two pulls later He looks at me and says " This this is BIG!" .. I just shook my head.. I grabbed the gaff and we headed down the bank.. It was an epic fight as the drag, backlash, and reel were all broken, or in the process of breaking.. after 15 minutes The beast was landed!!

90.7 lbs.. I think marty called it huh??

after all the excitement I proceeded to casting for six straight hours off and on and snagged ZERO fish.. This ISNT my sport..

I think ill just stick to what I am ok at...

Good job Marty!

Stick to what your "OK" at Mitch? :?: You win the Mr. Humble award. 8) Were do you find a paddle fish? I've never even heard of these things. Are they any good to eat. They look prehistoric like the sturgeon we have out here.

Thanks guys, EO basically they come out of the lake every year and migrate up the river to lay eggs.. That is were the snagging is done, the confluence of the yellowstone and missouri. and up the missouri.. they are rather prehistoric looking I would agree.. I have a large bruise under my "snagging" arm from yanking on the fishing pole. LOL

I just got an email stating the new north dakota record was caught just the other day at 130 lbs. and she had $900.00 worth of eggs in her. I guess a 16 year old kid caught it. Mitch i think you need a bigger hook when snagging

Nice fish. Great story Mitch. It does seem that when the reel breaks is when you are going to catch the big one. Same thing happened to me a couple years ago. The reel broke with the fish on and I had to wrap a stick around the line and started walking back up shore. That one weighed 77 pounds but had it hooked by the tail so it was able to go ANYWHERE it wanted to go.
Hang in there Mitch your time will come and I have a feeling that with you it will beat that NEW state record.
And Yes they are Great tasting fish. Best part is they are boneless.
