Re: questions for 308 shooters
Leadbiscuit,
I have a plan Jane Remington model 600 in 308 that I wouldn't sale or trade for any other gun in the world. This rifle is short and light, the barrel is 18in and a feather weight taper. I can load anything from 110gr bullets to 240gr bullets. I can hunt anything in the lower 48 states and not blink. I can shoot this little thing all day long with the lighter bullet weights. It is very accurate, less than 1 moa when I can hold it steady enough and I can hit 9in pie pans out to 500 yrds, good enough for me.
For me the 308 is the best overall cartridge. I read a few benchrest pubs from time to time and they are always coming up with bigger, better, faster but, they don't seem to me very practical for any sort of hunting, maybe pdogs on some of the smaller cartridges.
I don't know what the twist is on my barrel.
Just my thoughts

Re: questions for 308 shooters
I think that the 6.5's are under rated. They've kill a lot of elephants over the years with a 6.5x55 Swede. The 6.5's carry a lot of kinetic energy down range due i part by the high BC bullets and velocity that they retain.
I like my 308 too, but i want a 6.5 because it'll do the same job, faster, lighter and further.

Re: questions for 308 shooters
Comparing my .260 load with my "go to" .308 load (which is a VERY common .308 load), the .260 has the .308 beat in every department at 1000 yards. More energy, more momentum, less drop, less drift.
Nothing against the .308. If I could afford two long range rifles, id still have mine. Unfortunatly, I just cant afford having two multi-thousand dollar rigs sitting around (its not so much the rifle, but having $1500-$2000 scopes on them really hurts).

Broncstomper,
I think these guys got me pretty well talked into a 260. I recognize the logic in your comments. Sounds like you found the gun for you. I envy you for that. I'm not patronizing or sucking up. I mean that. Hopefully I can find mine sometime in the near future. I'll never be without a big 22 centerfire for sure. I still need a medium caliber.
thanks

leadbiscuit,
knowing that you can cut your own barrels, you're already at half price on barrels, in comparison to me, because i have to have someone cut mine. Cut one of each.
Then just swap barrels.

Re: questions for 308 shooters
Hi guys,
I have never been able to afford a really nice rig. I make due with store bought. The most expense gun I ever purchased was $1000 for a carbon fiber ar15. I have several firearms: handguns, rifles, shotgun. I always wanted to build a long range tactical rifle. But, with the economy the way it is and being semi retired I can't. So, what does a gut do? I have a Savage 300 Win. Mag. that I'll build some 180 and 200 gr loads for and make due with that. Maybe not the best but it'll due for now. I have another little toy I built, a Rem. xp100 in 22-6mm with a heavy 14inch barrel. But thats for another post.
Just my thoughts
Thanks all

BroncoB, there are several guys here that shoot the 22-6, it's a wicked cartridge.

I never get tired of looking at the guns on the link you posted. GAP makes some pretty cool stuff. BBJ, what's your rig like?

GAP isn't only looks, but the function of the gun is unreal. All i can say about it, is that is shoots pretty decent.
I'll let BBJ, tell you what he just picked up.
