Another coyote that chewed out of a snare
Here is another coyote that i called in that was wearing what was left of someone elses snare around her neck. I'm sorry i didn't take better pics but i had removed the snare already to see what kind of lock ect it was.

So it was kind of like shooting a banded goose
Instead you got a yote with some jewelry
must have been a female if it had jewlery on
Do you know what kind of lock or cam was on the snare??? Also what size cable did he chew threw?? I know its amazing what these critters can do when they need to. Great job!!!

I take it, it was a body catch? Or did the the lock just fail? Nice work Brad

It was a camlock and it was a neck catch. Tough to say the conditions or why the lock failed. This was on some public land where everyone and their uncle that want to snare can set up snares or traps.

It might be a long shot but he might have known that he was going through something and stopped and chewed the cable before it choked him. I dont know i am just throwing randoom thoughts out there.

Tim what are you refering to when loading a snare. The loading of a snare is done by very few and the concept is misinterupted or missed all together most of the time.
If coyotes are going to chew SOMETIMES it can't be helped but a properly placed snare with the right equipment will keep it to a minimum

Not sure i can exsplain it properly. What pre-loading or loading the snare does is make it close faster around the animals neck. The snare canbe loaded at both ends depending on how much and how fast you want it to close. From what i understand of it, it creates quicker kills and the snare is where its suppose to be, around the animals neck. Also by loading the snare it makes it more rounder.

preloaded snare will not kill any quicker, It does close the snare faster. It is like putting the snare on a hair trigger. On 7 x 7 cable it will make the loop rounder but on 1 x 19 cable I see very little difference.

Re: Another coyote that chewed out of a snare
you can use about anything. just have to be careful on how much you give it. the handle on a handyman jack is about the perfect diameter but you can use the handle on a pair of pliers if you want. I do not preload my snares anymore. out here in wyoming the winds just hammers the snares if they are set to light and preloading just makes it worse. Maybe if I was trying to snare a bunch of cats but with coyotes, especialy with fence snares, I do not do it.

Re: Another coyote that chewed out of a snare
I could see using the method more if you thought an old sheep killer had seen snares and was backing out or avoiding them but from the benefits i've seen from it i don't think it is worth the effort in my country

Re: Another coyote that chewed out of a snare
I don't load any of my snares either, it basicly just give the snare some memory like fishing line on a spool. It makes the lock fall a little faster but I don't think it is really needed. Was it 1/16 inch cable. Sometimes if you use the wrong sized lock on them hair will get caught in it and keep it from closing tight enough.
