Advice needed on SD Hunting..

Post by Petes »

Good day all! Im looking at heading from SE Minn to the grass lands south of Pierre mid to late Dec. I understand theres a good deal of public hunting land and since this will be my first trip to the area, any advice on do's and don't s will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Much!

Well besides the obvious follow all rules and regulations i would say if you hunt coyotes in MN apply the same tactics in south dakota and you will be successful. There are way too many tips and self experiences that apply to the situation at hand that no one will be able to share with you becuase each stand is different!

I believe the dog hunters work that area over pretty good dureing the winter and there are a few contests around that area as well.. On the plus side there are always a few coyotes around but you'll have to work for them.. Good luck

yeah, thats national grasslands down there.and it does get worked over pretty hard.the cheyenne reservation west of pierre is a better bet..if you stop and ask a few ranchers over there you shouldnt have much trouble having a bunch of land to hunt..also,the coyote population is down in that area due to mange over the past few years..good luck and have fun.

I actually live on the Cheyenne Reservation NW of Pierre about 70 miles. We had a great summer here lots of grass and cover, I actually think the coyote populations have made a rebound and I haven't seen a mangy one yet this fall. They are hard to see because of all the grass and lack of snow cover. If it is cold the grasslands south of Ft. Pierre would be good. If there isn't I've been having great luck on Prairie Dog Towns, the grass is somewhat shorter and they like to hang around there even in midday. Drop me a line when you are in the area, if it works I might be able to find you a place to hunt. murdockh@sodakadventure.com
