it is a blast!!! i've had two really good dogs over the last few years, and i'm training two dogs now..when the dogs figure out the deal,it is amazing to watch them work..my good friend Merv Griswold hs taught me alot over the years, and i've been lucky to come across some excellent dogs..if you ever get the opportunity to go with someone who uses decoy dogs dont pass it up..

I've got two that are with me every day and i've had the fortune to hunt over some real good dogs. In the control bussiness someone that doesn't have dogs isn't worth his salt. It is truly a sight to see good dogs work coyotes you get to see coyotes at close range and hear some very interesting vocalizations at close range.

I agree if you get the chance to hunt over dogs with someone that has good ones take advantage the first time i saw them work in person was with Calvin Taylor a few years back now it really opens your eyes to the coyote world.

They are not too hard to train, just takes some time and alot of coyotes to practice on. You don't want an over aggressive dog, they can end up chaseing the coyotes off.. When first starting you may want to train youre dog to come back to you with a squeaker or use a shock collar.. The best time to use them is when the coyotes are raiseing there pups..
I hunted with Randy Roede a few times and his dogs do a great job of decoying the coyotes..

The one piece of advice, is that if your just a recreational caller and thinking of getting a dog just for a few times, it isn't going to work out, it'll just be a lap dog that you have to feed and it won't catch on to the game. If you're in the control business and work coyotes, it is worth more than gold.

I'll never hunt without a dog unless i absolutely have to. They're are certain breeds that work better than others if you're looking for decoys. But an medium size dog that can learn to come back at the right time will work.

I was looking through some old stuff I had and found this . It isn't the best so I apologize for that. This is Dixie an old dog now. She is deaf now from shooting over her working coyotes. She belongs to friend Gene Garber. I used a little ingenuity and used my video camera and taped it off my vhs player. The clarity is not the best but you will get an idea how the dogs works. You don't just take Buffy out and put him on coyotes or no more Buffy. I have a lot of video of my dog Wiley working, but since most of my videoing is done by myself , I never get any kills on tape as I have to put camera down and shoot. I have a cam-corder mounted on .204 but that doesn't work for me very good. Everything has to be lined up just right. Needless to say, it is awful hard to video by yourself and shoot. Like Deano said, decoy dogs are not for everybody but are a nice tool to have if you are a ADC man. It takes a lot of time on coyotes to get the dog to figure out what you want him to do. Then all of a sudden the light comes on and thats all it takes. I would not recommend using decoy dog unless you are really serious and want to spend a lot of time in field with your dog. I haven't been fair to my dog . We haven't been getting out as much lately. Consequently we are both getting fat. Please don't be too hard on me. Enjoy the video. I know you can transfer VHS to DVD, but I don't have one. I hope this comes out.

 I thought maybe you'd chimp in a video. What kind of dog is that? It almost looks like a kelpie or border cross. Gotta love reverse psychology, its fun were using their game on them.

Deano, that dog in the video is a mountain cur female. It came out of Jack Alexanders dogs. He is a state trapper and has some good lion dogs also. When someone has a mountain lion problem , they call him. He lives in the Black Hills , and I never have met him.

Jerry,
I had to take a second look at the video. It kind of looked like a kelpy at first, but now that you say what it is, the picture becomes clear that it is a mc. I've never seen a black one, but then again they do come in every color. There's a guy here that has a very good looking brindle one, it's the coolest looking cur i've ever seen. Maybe the next one i'll have to get in brindle. :)
