Is a 7mm too big or small for coyotes? How does it compare against a 22-250 or a .243? What would the range be (approximately) in a 7mm using off-the-shelf ammo? Any accurate brands on a budget?

Too big.

Comparison:
7mm = .284 caliber (think bullet width) with 140 to 175 grain bullets compared to .22 & .24 (6mm) with 50 to 100 grain bullets.

7mm mags = elk, sheep, goats, ...anything big in North America except Griz. 7mm08 for deer.

Range: Further than we can shoot. Noted for its downrange energy. Many accurate bullets/loadings. Good stuff will cost around $30-40 per box.


Note: Most will agree that a .243/ 6mm is as big as you'll want to go for coyotes.

If you're buying a "coyote gun" thats a lot of gun man.

If your looking for the do it all gun that is a pretty good choice.

Don't expect much salvageable fur with it though

actually it might not be to bad if you think about it. If you use a match round that doesn't open up to much it probably wouldn't be to bad at all. But it all depends on the bullet, and what you hit. If you hit some heavy bone, you won't have to worry about which half to drag back to the truck.

I would use it for a couple years, then think about how serious you want to be then buy a coyote rifle. There is no fur market this year for coyotes. Who cares if theres a big ass hole for a $5 coyote.

I'm just trying to figure out bullet widths here man I understand the progression from .22 up to .375, but when you throw mm's into it I get confused

The guy sold it the day before I was going to look at it. Crappy deal but I found a place in Lake Benton, MN called Kjergarrd Sports that has over 3,000 guns. Gonna keep watching that place for diff. guns.

I know a few guys who have shot the bigger guns with full metal jackets. they buck the wind well and who cares anyways with $5 coyotes. If that is all you got shoot it. Not the best choice though but you could make it work.

My dad was coyote hunting using a 7mm and he shot one at 550 yards! If you plan on keaping the pelt then it is to big but just for shooting it it works just fine.

Fur friendly it is not BUT,

The BC of the 7MM is FANTASTIC, I own a Kimber Montana in 7WSM.

She really can fling em sweet, 700 YDS is almost easy.......
