Hey everyone, I have been forever a avid deer hunter but coyote hunting has always intrigued me. Now I have the opportunity to start!
I live in a suburb outside of Indy and my mom's friend has a farm outside city limits. She has had a problem with a group of 10-12 coyotes running the property and harassing animals. She would like me to come out and start harvesting them. I am really excited, the only problem is, I don't know much about coyote hunting. I don't have any decoys, calls or fancy coyote guns. This is where YOU come in. Any advice or suggestions you have for me, throw them at me! I am eager to learn more about this increasingly popular sport!
-I will be using a Mossberg 535 12gauge shotgun with a 22" barrel. I can shoot shells up to 3.5". What loads/chokes do you recommend for hunting dogs with this gun?
-Can you recommend any calls, decoys or other essentials I will need to be successful?
One thing to keep in mind, I am a college student on a low budget, so the more wallet friendly these necessities are, the better!
Any feedback at all is helpful. Thanks for your time!

Welcome to the site deerslayer06! I am also very new to coyote hunting, but I know for a fact that one of the first things you should do is to check your state furbearer hunting laws to make sure you know WHEN you can hunt, HOW you can hunt, etc. One of the calls that I have heard great things about and had to pick up the other day is the Ki-Yi made by Primos. I like how it sounds so far but haven't gotten to test it in the field, so I can't testify to how good or bad of a call it is. Do some looking around on this site, there's tons of info. and plenty of people willing to help out a fellow hunter. Good luck!

Hello,
Good to hear your getting into the sport!.. prepare to be addicted
..
As far as calls go, you cant go wrong with a sceery or a circe.. both are great affordable calls.. the model AP6 made by sceery is a great call, also the Circe open country I think they call it? Is A good call..
Always play the wind.. ( in your face, or a crosswind) and DONT give up.. Im sure more people will add stuff, I better get out the door, I might go try to call one in

The cheapest hand call you can find, a handful of four buck shells with a full choke in your gun and the wind in your face. I would however highly suggest borrowing or buying a rifle of somesort. You are going to call in a lot of coyotes that won't come into shotgun range and the first time you call a coyote in is the easiest time to kill him.
If you get out there and think it's something for you and get the addiction then worry about the upgrades.
