Non-Lethal Seminars and Symposiums?

Post by jcb1911 »

The Texas Ag Extension Service is putting on seminars through out southern and west texas to talk about non-lethal predator management and its effectiveness. As an ADC and Predator Management Specialist the thought that a contraceptive is going to be more effective than proper population and land management really worries me. But the thing that really gets me going is the fact that very few of these authorities have very little or no experience on the ground with the animals they are trying to control and base most of thier assumptions off of someone else's dissertation. I was just wondering if this type of thing might be getting any circulation in your areas? and What the folks on this forum think of this?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The current way of controlling populations work fine. Damn liberals!

Well I wish I could get them to see it that way. Hell they even got us going to training on how to properly set up a bait site with the contraceptive.

If you could get them to read some studies that show how a coyote determines litter sizes and reproduction i think they might have another outlook onit. The more food in the area the more coyotes there will be. The less the food the bigger the range thus giving more competition and smaller litter size.

Believe it or not a few of the individuals at the fore front of the project have conducted some pretty interesting studies on the ecology of coyotes with special attention to disperssion. I think that one of the biggest factors is that the green groups are getting involved more and more and it may have something to do with project funding. Kind of going along to get along. I just wish they would stand their ground and let the folks in the field devote there efforts to techniques that work.

Well, I made it through the 6hr contraceptive class. (Thats 6hrs of my life I wont get back :x ). The funny thing was that this guy appeared as if the only coyote he had ever seen was in his 3yr olds animal pop up book. The good news is that all of the ADC specialists are responsible for the field analysis of the system inside a 10,000 acre control area  and I think we all know what those results are going to show next year in comparison to traditional methods in a simialar control area.

Cowboy Logic. There is no arguing with cowboy logic. The Sierra Club and the US Forest Service were presenting an alternative to Wyoming ranchers forcontrolling the coyote population. It seems that after years of the ranchers using the tried and true methods of shooting and/or trapping the predator, the tree-huggers had a "more humane" solution. What they proposed was for the animals to be captured alive, the male castrated and let loose again and the population would be controlled. This was ACTUALLY proposed to the Wyoming Wool and SheepGrower's Association by the Sierra Club and the USFS. All of the ranchers thought about this amazing idea for a couple of minutes. Finally, an old boy in the back stood up, tipped his hat back and said, "Son, I don't think you understand the problem. Those coyotes ain't !*3%in' our sheep, they're eatin' 'em
I would rather have a slow hit than a fast miss...
