females and carrying pups?
I shot two coyotes today and the male was rubbed really bad and the female looked decent yet but she was a barrell on legs. My question is if i were to cut that female open would i be able to count the pups or are they a little underdeveloped cause its a little early? I am curious on what a littler size would be for that area. I left that male lay there and female i gave to the guy i was with but i told him i would call him and let him know if he should cut it.

I just talked to the guy and he said that he counted 7 pups. When looking at the age of the dog i guessed it was a 2 year old female. The teeth were really white with a little wear and i guessed that she weighed around 30 lbs. she was wet though with the heavy snow that we have. I really wish i would have brought my camera cause i would have taken some pics and posted them. Oh well there is always another one to post in the future

Interesting
Im sure the guy disposed of everyhting by now but next time that happens i will definetely dig right in and do that. I think there is a lot a guy can learn by understanding the gestations periods of a coyote!

I am sure there is a bunch of documentation on this but coyotes are very good parents the success rate is extremely high on pups. I think it is only about half make it past the one year mark and that about only one out of a litter of 6 will reach 5 years of age in a controlled population. I am going from memory and it would take me a minute or two to dig up where I read that info.

Get in line, I am pretty sure any half way decent coyotes will be going on the stretchers, my fur shed is pretty empty!coyotman wrote:why did u leave the male?
if u decide to leave a male again take it and pm me and i will come and get it from you
I don't think it matters male or female, its how the fur looks.
