Hence some of the effectivness of the "dirthole set" a lot of animals will cache food and coyotes are no dummys they have figured that out.

Also it takes a lot of energy and food to provide all of that breast milk for those pups just ask your wife! :D

The female may have been bringing food back to the den for her mate or another coyote thats watching the pups... Or she took advantage of what she found and filled up and then will lay low for a few days feeding the pups milk..

double den

It can happen from time to time where another coyote will take care of another coyotes pups. But you mentioned at the time that you where chaseing the female coyote and she ran into the den hole. I've seen a few chased by the plane do this a few times, where they duck into any nearby hole they can find to escape the plane and this could be the same case with youre female coyote you shot. She could of been useing the den and then maybe not..

coyotes will be coyotes so anything is possible. We see way to many double dens in this coutry to not consider it a strong possibility. During this time of year most wet or loaded females will stay clear of another coyotes core area but again coyotes will be coyotes.

I find a coyote being spottend fifty yards from the den with another coyote and then running into the den far from the possibility of a coyote just looking for a "hole" she knew exactly where it was because she was protectin it and staying close to it. This time of year a coyote that close to a den is not just roaming the "country side"
